There are two possibilities here, one is a root surface filling and one is a root canal filling. I am guessing that this is a question about the latter.

Root canal treatment involves accessing the pulp chamber and canal system of a tooth, removing the pulp, cleaning and shaping the canals, filling the canals with guttapercha rubber or other biocompatible filling material and sealing the access cavity adequately.

The main reason for doing this treatment is to removed infected pulp tissue from the canals and pulp space. Infected pulp tissue can cause infection to spread beyond the tooth into the periapical space and into the periodontal ligament causing pain, swelling and possibly the feeling that the tooth is 'raised' in its socket.

Pulp tissue includes nerves and blood vessels. It's removal means that the tooth becomes non-vital (dead).

Hi there, this thread is from a while back but I'm just curious about this comment. If a tooth is dead after a root canal how come it doesn't go black? Probably a stupid question but I'm just curious. Cheers.

Wow, it's weird that this thread should come back 3 days after i finally get a root canal on the tooth I asked about in my original post. Turns out I had to wait ages for the bottom of the root to close before he could finally do the actual root canal. It still hurts a bit :(

Anyway, the tooth does eventually turn dark, i have another root canal out front due to a chipped tooth which is beginning to go that way unfortunately :(

Just came across this thread and unfortunatly I've to get a root canal filling done aswell! However my dentist said he can't do it and has given me the numbers of several specialists - only problem is the nearest appointment is ages away and I'm in complete agony :(

My dentist has done root canals before on other members of my family so I'm confused as to why I've to wait and go to a specialist, obviously I want to get it treated as soon as possible because the pain is becoming unbearable. Fingers crossed I get a cancellation!

Andrew how are you feeling now?!

I'm not to bad thanks for asking :) it's not so much the tooth but the tissue around it, so i still can't eat on it and it kinda hurts in general. The reason mine was delayed was because I was too young (16) and in that particular tooth the bottom part hadn't closed off or something, maybe that's why yours can't be done?? Maybe he or your Doc could give you some stronger painkillers or something? Good luck, I know exactly how you feel.
