Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    If you think your suffering from depression what should you do first

    go for conselling
    go to gp
    look into seeing some specialist

    Pretty much all of those are a good first step, though seeing a counsellor or your GP are good ways of finding a specialist to deal with.

    GPs are less good at diagnosing depression than those with psychiatric or counselling experience, but are able to prescribe anti-depressants.

    Anti-depressants are not a panacea, so there'll most likely still be **** you have to sort out but there are some people that seem to have a depression that is almost entirely a matter of chemistry, and for the rest anti-depressants can get you temporarily sorted out enough to deal with other issues.

    Personally i'd try a bit of 'self' help first.

    Usually if you examine your life youwill find things you can change, eg job, social circle etc.

    also its recognised that regular exercise releases chemicals to the brain hich combat depression.

    Again, I suppose the steps you take, need to take into account the severity of the depression.

    If you find you cant do everyday tasks, without difficulty, i'd go to the GP.

    Start with your GP? He/she can also refer you to a therapist.

    I'd be with Blue_lagoon.

    1. Head to your GP first. They might prescribe you anti-d's to help you to get a better outcome out of counselling sessions and to take the edge off. If you'd prefer not to take them say this to your GP
    2. When at the GP',s ask for a recommendation for a counsellor. The GP should have a list and if they don't they'll help you get one.

    Be as honest as you feel comfortable with the people you talk to. It'll make it easier for them to support you.

    I tried exercise, fallowed a very hard regime for the last 2 months, with only a slight improvement

    you are right about work, I only feel like everything is pointless on my way to or from work and most of the day at work. i would love to chage carrer but i keep changing my mind too often to get anything done

    when i feel low i plan to go see the doctor on a day off, but on the days off i feel great, and its like the bad days were only a bad dream, everything seems kinda hazy when i think back

    also notice that i never talk to people when i feel low, and they all looks shocked on my good days when i join in the chat

    Exercise doesnt have to be a very hard regime. Go for a walk listning to your favourite music or walk down to the park to feed the ducks:)

    That's very frustrating isn't it. Even if you feel well on your next day off please go to your doctor. You won't be wasting their time. You're paying them remember. If the bad days are bad enough to have you thinking you have depression then they need sorting.

    How about you write down how you feel on your bad days? It's a great way to vent and clear your head.

    You could then possibly use your writings in your sessions with a counsellor if you like? They don't have to read them but you could use them to help you to explain how bad you feel on your bad days.

    The hardest part of being depressed can sometimes be putting your feelings into words.
