I’ve just uploaded a couple of trails under the name “nomdeboardie” to try this out myself. They’re at
    http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=637406 and
    http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=637407
I had a look at one of yours Burly – nice. I'll keep a lookout for requests for Wicklow/Dublin (I don't have tracks from other areas yet) and/or put up other stuff piecemeal if it takes off. I see a few entries for this area already (searching for “Wicklow”), inc. some nice ones from a Joe King. Looking at those I see one of my entries is a subsection of his Sugarloaves walk, so my upload for this was pretty pointless in retrospect. This brings up the question of how best to co-ordinate uploads, naming conventions etc between users, if at all.

(PanK: I have some tracks that overlap some bits of that WicklowWay section, but not the whole of it, sorry.)

Had a look at those nomdeoardie, I particularly like the Lug one. Havent done form Glenmalure side yet, done it twice from the Glen of Imail side.
Hmmm might just hit the Lug this weekend......weather permitting

Thanks; for what its worth, I’ve also put up a sub-track that follows the main stream in the upper Fraughen Rock valley to it’s source, then kinks around onto the Cloghernagh-Lug ridge http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=638164

I’ve just thought now to search with “Lugnaquilla” and found 4 other entries, 3 of which are loops starting/ending with the equivalent of my track then going up/back along the Cloghernagh route (via the “Zig Zags” beside the Carawaystick waterfall), so I won’t upload my version of the latter. The other EveryTrail entry follows a fairly straight route across the upper Fraughan valley, which would be similar to one of the tracks Alun uploaded a few posts back (p2) of this thread; I plan to mimic this apporach next time I’m there.

Strange that these entries do not seem to come up with a “Wicklow” search. I’ve also been looking again at OpenStreetMaps – there are quite a few tracks there but I haven’t worked out yet how to actually find the gpx file for a given route yet. How best to improve our ability to find or co-ordinate what’s already out there, I wonder? I’m still getting familiar with EveryTrail, so I won’t make any further suggestions in case I end up taking them back soon with a “duh…”

Dont forget, with everytrail.com, you can upload pictures and write a description about you walk.
I wouldnt worry about duplicating some one elses log, everyones experience is different, with weather, scenery, photos etc.
Make you own logs stand out by having a good description, and some good photos. You will find then, that other users will rate your trips and may 'favourite' your trip

Thanks – I had it bookmarked before but have just now realised that trails can be downloaded (after registering, which I haven’t yet)

I'm guessing its ok to keep resurrecting this thread...

I have been looking into starting to GPS log my hikes as of late also. And I have found some useful sites which you also might find helpful (You may have come across them already).

GPSies.com - a decent amount of maps in Ireland.

GPS Visualiser - - Good to visualise routes elevation-wise

Wandermap.com - has a good list walks worldwide, a decent amount in Ireland.

Also this website has some good offline GPS maps with contours also. the method is a bit complicated but I have done it successfully.

What is a good format for sharing tracklogs? GPX seems to be a reasonable format, and is a supported format within GoogleEarth. Any better suggestions? Apologies if this has been covered previously, the forum search isn't working very well..

Hi Krusty_Clown, a website I created http://www.WalkingRoutes.ie allows members to upload GPX files. The website focuses on Ireland and allows people to comment, upload photos, rate trails all that sort of thing.

Sounds good. I've been posting some of mine to my old webserver here (see the hiking trails menu in the top-left of the screen). Will start uploading them to your site, when I get some free time.

Another place to find GPS tracks for hillwalking is mountainviews.ie
This site has 1:10000 layer and airphoto from Ordnance Survey Ireland, Open Street Map, Google etc.
The display of tracks is integrated with hill/mountain information (over 1000 of them).
    Examples:
    Short: mountainviews.ie/track/1771/
    Medium: mountainviews.ie/track/1871/
    Long: mountainviews.ie/track/2207/
    Abroad (Peru): mountainviews.ie/track/2187/
This website is an Irish non-profit with an online community, offline meets, newsletter etc.

Hi duckysauce, thanks for your great welcome. There seem to be some interesting innovations in how Boards organises its forums. Removing friction in interaction seems to have been very well developed - there's a feel of solidity and an absence of excessive flashy javascript. Am I right in thinking that it's Irish developed and operated like MV?
