Can't seem to find the answer for sure on the web. Is it just the Ghia model that has abs or do they all Lx etc, hatch and saloon etc ?

    Thanks.

    Not standard until late 2003.

    Hmm, can't afford a late 2003 one though :(

Was thinking in the 10-12K range for a car with ~1.6L petrol engine with ABS and the Focus seemed to fit the bill (not financial obviously!).
I'm moving to a house in the Wicklow mountains and being higher up the roads are much more likely to be more slippery in winter so ABS is something worth investing in - if I can afford it.

Any suggestions for reliable alternatives ?

I always presumed it was standard on the Focus.

Corolla has had standard ABS since the late 90's
    Might be worth a look

Is that standard accross all models Colm ?, a Corolla would do nicely too.

Focus Ghia had ABS as standard. It was an optional extra on all other models up until 2003.

I've seen a 06 Focus with drums on the back, is the abs just on the front wheels or did they work out a way to get it to work with drums? The Mark IV Golf came with Abs as standard from the begining if I remember correctly.

ABS can work on drums, the Yaris for instance has ABS with EBD and drums.

Ahh, so an 2001 -2002 Ghia should have it, that might fit the bill allright.

Should do. The easiest way to check is that most cars that have ABS fitted have a little ABS light on the dashboard near the speedo and odometer. When you turn the ignition on the ABS light along with the air bag light, etc comes on for a few seconds. This is the engine management system checking these devices are functioning ok.

Another way to be sure is when test driving the car, when safe to do so, test the brakes, a car with ABS will behave differently when you hit the brakes to a car without ABS. This is quite noticable when you are not used to ABS.

Have to say every car should have ABS ...... had to pay extra on a regular Focus hatch a few years ago but well worth it .... it could save your life one day ..... :)

(we skipped the All'y wheels and electric sunroof and got ABS and Traction Control instead)
