I can't speak for every league because I've only played in two.

In one of them it was very straightforward, 8 players on each team play, the best of 3 legs 501.

In the other, it was a 7 man team. The first game was 1001 (five players from each team play), then 2 games of doubles (best of 3 legs, 501) then five games of singles (best of 5, 501)

That sounds like it is a rather quick night of darts.

The two leagues that I have shot mixed up the games alot more.

    1) 501 Singles
    2) Chicago Format Doubles (501, 301 Cricket) winner of the diddle calls game
    3) 301 Singles
    4) Cricket Doubles
    5) Chicago Format Singles
    6) Choice Doubles (the team losing at this point decides the games)
    7) 301 Doubles
    8) Cricket Singles
    9) 501 Doubles.

I realise that 'cricket' is much more of an American dart game and is not played much over here.

Our league in Donegal uses the following format:
3 games of doubles 501 best of 3.
Followed by 6 doubles 501 best of 3.
Stright in double out, toss to throw for bull if game goes to 1-1.

Knockout cup best of 7, each match best of 5.
