BT dsl problem

Recently signed up for BT broadband (+UK calls package). Received router but DSL led never lights up. Called up and I'm told the line IS enabled for broadband but is "not responding well to tests" that the support guy runs. Have tried the usual suggestions, connected to main socket, tried with/without filter, tried an old Eircom router that worked in a house down the road...

The house is in a new estate and I know several people who have broadband working (through Eircom and up to recently Smart). The support guy is suggesting dialup  or wireless.

Any suggestions? Could there be a genuine problem with the line (phone is fine)? If possible, shouldn't BT be able to investigate / push Eircom to resolve?

    Thanks.
