IGN and Gamespot spring to mind, though there are probably other popular ones I don't know about.

yea - to be honest I was hoping for something a little better - they seem to give generic and soft reviews. ...or perhaps I'm being a little too critical.

Yeah I suppose it depends on what you want really... I don't read reviews for the reviewers opinion, I just want the facts/screenshots/video... after all the reviewer is just another random boob with his own tastes and preferences.
Case in point is Doom3... I f*cking hated that POS game, yet it got so many great reviews.

I just want good to be good, and great to be great, as opposed to great being ok, and good being sh1t!

Its always worth having a look at game rankings: http://www.gamerankings.com/
They calculate an average score from a number of review sites inlcuding the biggies like IGN, Gamespy and Gamespot. I find its ratings are pretty reliable because the bia of any one review site evens out in the mix. You can click through to read the individual reviews too. Of course it will always be behind the individual review sites because gamerankings needs to wait for others to review a game in order to compile rankings.

In my experience generic review sites are fine for games with mass appeal. If you are really interested in a particular genre of game I find it is worth digging out a specialist site where they really know that type of gaming inside out. RPGdot is my favorite for Role playing games. MMORPG.com is excellent for MMORPGs (mind you people who play MMORPGS have no time to play other games so they don't need reviews lol). I have also seen some excellent wargaming and simulation gaming review sites.

GameRankings is very handy, and a personal fave for reviews is http://www.eurogamer.net aswell

But ideally read several sites, no site is perfect and they're all full-o-crap sometimes.

yeh eurogamer seem to give the least 'glossy' most down to earth reviews of the sites i've seen, but as a previous poster staed i prefer to give games a shot where possible than relying on too many reviews.

Only thing is they don't review that many games, but they catch all the biggies at least, and do them damn well!

Eurogamer is my favourite review site, but it's utterly ****e for PC games.
