What pisses you off while driving?

The thing that really gets me whilst driving is the impatience, rudeness and anger of drivers in general on Irish roads.

This is clearly demonstrated in this thread.

Breaking the law is one thing, no lights on the phone etc, but no-one gets it right all the time.

Try and stick to the 60kph speed limit on the M50 out to the airport just for a laugh.
Watch the pissed off faces and people overtaking you dangerously.

Drivers seem only to want others to stick to the rules so they can break them and get on their way faster.

Oh and if a car is in the "Overtaking lane" doing the speed limit - who are you overtaking? - your wrong full stop - but you still think your right because you can break the speed limit if you want.

Take your time and have respect for other road users.

Haven't read the whole thread, but one of my pet hates that I haven't seen noticed is drivers on a minor road approaching a major road from the left with the intention to turn left and drive to the major road far too fast hoping that they won't have to yield and only break if they absolutely have to. I often have to slow down when I see these muppets coming from the left to give me time to react if they do stupidly go for it.

And add drivers in cars with tinted windows to the list also. Eye contact is important - i.e. in the example above if I see a muppet coming from left and hoping not to break, if he's in a car with tinted windows it's even harder to tell if he is preparing to break or not.

Try obeying the law on a motorway where there's a train of cars in the overtaking lane some time and then try to overtake safely when you come up behind a car/truck/bus doing less than the speed limit. Oh wait, am I wrong to want to overtake them safely and legally? Better to have a few people breaking the speed limit and traffic dispersed than to have traffic clustered behind one stubborn ass and people having to force their way into a 120km/hr queue from the driving lane any time they need to overtake.

A perfect example of this is the M50 southbound between Firhouse and Ballinteer even before the roadworks. It's effectively a one lane road when it should be operating as a two lane road since everyone who wants to do the speed limit has to drive in the overtaking lane behind the hoggers or else be trapped behind the micras in the driving lane.

    Everything posted plus..

Old people going to mass ...

Women who are on their way to pick up the kids at school time...

These people will drive through red lights, make illegal turns, speed, drive in bus lanes, overtake on the inside.....anything so as they're not late....i've seen it ..

to add...this really annoys me...people who dont keep their cars clean..how many times have you seen a new/nice car covered in muck..and i'm suprised at the amount of "ladies" .....ffs theres no excuse..its just pure laziness...
I was stopped behind a 08 (i think) merc in stillorgan..you could hardly read the reg plate...but there she was doing her hair and lippy while all around was muck...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,085 ✭✭✭✭Stark

My car is usually covered in muck a day after I get it cleaned. Not really prepared to clean it daily. Though I do get it cleaned once it gets to the stage where it's bordering on not roadworthy, ie: reg plate and headlights/indicators etc. obscured by dirt.

The school run mummies and daddies piss me off as they're constantly driving into our apartment complex to park up on the footpath and then there's a queue to get out as they do their seven point turns.

Did you not read any of this thread?

same nutters also travel on the right hand side of the lane so you can't pass them safely even though there might be 10m of lane + hard shoulder to their left :mad:

Anyone wearing a cap. If it's a flat cap they're probably driving at 20kmh, and if its a baseball cap at 120kmh

Good luck explaining that to the judge if you ever get in an accident.
Glad to see your main concern is traffic dispersement and not overall road safety.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,835 ✭✭✭CamperMan

your driving along on a straight quiet road at 80kmph, you see a car waiting to pull out from the side road or driveway in the distance, that driver has plenty of time to pull out, you keep going and then the d!ckhead pulls out right at the last minute causing you to brake then they proceed to drive very slowly in front of you. Now that really friggin annoys me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,211 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

People who are turning right at a set of lights. The filter to go right is red, but to go straight on it's green.

They slow right down, and just drift into the lane for turning right, leaving you stuck behind them while the light to go straight on turns red.

Does my head in. Also people turning off motorways who just wander really slowly into the turning off lane. Same thing pretty much.

Is there such a thing as a roadway with two driving lanes?

Im on this stretch of the road everyday and the problem is that there is such a variance in the speed that the cars are driving at that u either get stuck behind the 40kph-ers or are holding up the 120kph-ers

Never, ever drive on the continent, so. People in France, Germany and Italy know what the outside lane is for, and your "Keycamp" sticker won't get you any sympathy.

If you are capable of moving over, you are breaking the law by not keeping left. There is no such thing as the fast lane.

People who stop on pedestrain crossings.

When traffic is backed up I realise the lights can change on you and you cannot move. But at least stay off the pedestrian crossings and let people who waited for the green man to get across

    Cars on footpaths.
You bought a house, you bought a car, did you consider the parking situation before you did both?

To quote the Rules of the Road
    Lane 1 (To the left)
The normal ‘keep left’ rule applies. Stay in this lane unless you are overtaking.
    Lane 2 (To the right)
On a two-lane motorway, use this for overtaking only and move back into lane 1 (The Left lane) when you have finished. You may also use this lane to accommodate traffic merging from the left.

Truck 1. In slow lane doing 90kph

Truck 2. Can do slightly faster them truck one, about 90.99kph Truck 2 tries to over take truck 1.

They do that so bob the hairy arse driver can get to his destination 1 minute quicker then his equally hairy arse peer. And it pisses me off. Rightly

There not even ment to use that lane except for merging with traffic.

Secondly: people with one headlight. There cheap and easy to replace so it no reason to drive on one headlamp at night. Then they try to compensate by using full beam. Its stupid and downright dangerous.

Mini roundabouts: there still roundabouts people! Use the indacators please!

They are not meant to use which lane?
If you are referring to an overtaking lane, then this is only on dual carriageways with more than two lanes.

Whilst I agree that they are annoying, don't forget that they may just have recently blown or the driver may be unaware of it. Also some cars require a mechanic to replace the bulb!

Really? How often do you lose a bulb? Once in 5 years?

It could be once in 20 years, its still going to happen and chances are that you will encounter said driver on said night. Not much anyone can do in that situation.

You'd need to be blind not to notice, however, sane people also use their lights during the day and unless the vehicle tells you it's gone, like mine does, you're hardly going to spot it.

Actually, no, the odds are against it to such an extent that I can confidently state that of the last 100 [edit]s I met with bad lights, exactly none of them were good citizens who were unaware of the problem.

    100% of them either:

    1. Don't have a clue

    or

    2. Don't give a [edit]

Either way, I'm sure that in 15 years or so, some dumbass will do a survey and figure out that it's really dangerous! and mount a government ad campaign etc. etc.

    Not quite. :)
You're not supposed to put an automatic in Park at lights, or at a junction, or anywhere else you're not actually "parking". Once the car is in Drive, it should be kept that way, changing an automatic from Park to drive all the time is not the same as putting a manual in neutral at lights, there is no clutch in an automatic and it puts unnecessary wear on the gearbox.
Putting your foot on the brake is standard practice with an auto box when only stopped temporarily.

Having said that, I wouldn't blame anyone for thinking you should stick it in Park, as I was of the same thinking myself until I started driving one. So unfortunately drivers behind me will continue to glow red. :)

Remided of another annoying habit today - people who move acorss the yellow box at the last minute when lights going to red.

Road kinda goes from 1 one to 2 lanes when you move across the yellow box.
I was sitting the far side of the yellow box with maybe half a car length behind me.
First car at the lights decided he would not move across into the yellow box.
Second car at lights was getting annoyed first car would not move.
Lights go amber/red, first car moves across the yellow box.
This drives second car driver nuts & he dives across the red light on the inside.

Oh yes you are! I use park at junctions all the time and have driven automatics for years. It does not strain the gearbox at all. Park locks the axle and gearbox. Leaving an auto in drive puts strain on the torque converter.

Well, this is baffling me I have to say, I posted on here before about this fact when I started driving an auto and I was shot down by numerous auto drivers for doing what you do. So who's right?

I've another one. Nervous drivers looking to merge onto the N4 when they've come to a complete stop. Think the lucan off ramp just past the Texaco garage. You see 5 or 6 cars coming along the N4 and they all pull into the right lane/fast lane/overtaking lane to let the driver pull out. Do they pull out?
Not a bloody chance, I hate being stuck behind them.
