I'm looking into buying a (very) used car (about 10 years old - looking to spend 1,000 to 1,500). Does anyone know how to go about getting a mechanic to briefly check out a car before i buy it? I only know a couple of mechanics personally and they wouldn't be in the right area. Should i just ring a load of garages and ask them if i can make an appointment or would it have to be a nixer? I know the AA offer a service but it seems to be extremely thorough and could be too expensive if i have to check a few different cars.

What kind of car? Sometimes a specialist is better than an ordinary mechanic. Enthuasiast sites can be good sources of local help.
However failing that, try the Buy and Sell.
BTW, 10 years is not old!

I'm just looking for a reliable run-around. I've been looking for polos, starlets, micras, fiestas etc. I've no trouble finding them advertised, its just that most cars of that value are sold privately and therefore without warrenty, so i'd really want them to be checked out. The problem is finding a mechanic to do it at short notice (can't really tell a seller i'll get back to them in a week or so..)
