Just looking for some opinions / ideas here:

Ive always been a v bad sleeper. Suffered insomnia for years. I run my own business and work v long hours. But no matter how tired I am I find it v difficult to sleep. If I go to bed at 12 it could be 2/3 before I get to sleep and then I wake at about 6. It would be great if i could get more sleep but im used to it at this stage and it doesnt bother me. People have suggested that maybe I have a lot on my mind and this keeps my mind busy but im not really a worrier so i can easily forget about the hassles of the day or the problems im facing the next day.

I can put up with insomnia because i only need 3/4 hrs sleep to survive. However over the last few weeks I have been waking up with serious pains in my back muscles. It is almost as if they are spasming (word?) It may sound strange but to get rid of the pain I literally have to tell myself that I am not in pain. It can sometimes take me 10 mins to calm down the spasms and get out of bed.

The mattress i sleep on is the same mattress i have been using for the last 6 months so perhaps this is not the problem??

I only ever sleep with one pillow... it was suggested to me to try raise my head a little bit so i have tried sleeping with more pillows but this did not help.

I am having the same problems when i sleep in my gf's bed also.

SO im beginning to think that it is not the environment im sleeping in but me??

Id love to know what is causing this as it is ruining the little sleep i get at the moment. I go to bed tired and wake up even more tired! The last time i woke up with pains was when i was locked drunk! Doesnt really count.

Anyhu, perhaps ye can suggest some possible causes / solutions to this for me?

    Thanks in advance.

Stretches in the morning when you wake could help. One stretch for the back I can recommend to you. It's called the fireman's stretch. I will try to describe it to you.

Lay flat on your back on the floor. Raise the right leg, bending the knee completely, and hold that knee with your two hands for about one minute. Ensure that the left leg is straight and flat on the floor. Return to the flat position. Now raise the left leg and bend the knee, while at the same time ensuring that the right leg remains flat on the floor. Hold for one minute, before returning it to be flat on the floor. Repeat this stretch with the right, then the left once more. Do this every morning and it just may help you with your back condition.

Have you seen a professional on this yet? Maybe if you talk to your GP (who would have any medical history on you) could help, he may be able to advise the correct exercise, or introduce a method that maybe able to help. insomina can become a very hard cycle to break and sounds like yours is getting worse.

People here can give you advice or methods that have worked for them in the past and I think there is a thread on tips for good sleep somewhere in here, with some methods that maybe of use to you. I would consider getting some expert help on this as back pain can be tricky, and left could cause more problems than you may care to want. Just a suggestion.
