I have been playing Ryzom since the open beta testing began. I never thought I'd get into MMOs (I was mostly into playing first person shooters), but Ryzom has managed to hold my attention so far.

There is no time limit on the trial so download it and give it a go at you leisure.
If you do decide to subscribe you will be given access to the mainland. The trial will only give you access to the Ruins of Silian (the training area) and has a few restrictions.

There are four races to choose from: Matis, Fyros, Tryker or Zorai - if you progress to the mainland you will end up in the racial region belonging to the race you choose. The only difference between the races is fame, different races get a head start in fame with different factions and fame dictates how NPCs of the factions react to you.

The mainland is quite big so if a friend on the training island picks another race it may take some time to meet. Each racial area of the map is divided into different difficulty levels: 1-50, 50-100, 100-150, 150-200 and 200-250.

There is good PvP content, or in most cases if it isn't your thing you can avoid it. Skills are pretty open in Ryzom, it starts in four main categories (fight/magic/craft/harvest) and as you reach certain levels it branches out into other skills. For example if you level your fight skill to level 21 it branches out into Ranged weapons or melee weapons.

You can progress all skills up to level 250 so you don't have to specialise in just one skill.

When you get to the mainland here are three factions to choose from, Karavan/Neutral/Kami going for any of these will dictate which teleports you can get.

Nevrax, the company that owned Ryzom were in the process of liquidation, while they went through the final stages signing up to the game was frozen for a month while bids for the game came in. The Ryzom community raised around €170k to try and buy it to make Ryzom open source. In the end a German company called Gameforge came out with the highest bid and the billing system is back open for people to subscribe again.

Ryzom has an unlimited free trial, but there is a level cap and you are confined to the newbie island.

Looks like Ryzom has come out of liquidation for a second time, yup it is a bit like Rasputin and refuses to die. At present while the new company get it up and running it seems to be free. Go to www.ryzom.com and download the installer if you are looking for another mmo to entertain you for a while.

Is it free in the same way it was free last time? ie. Stuck forever on newbie island? Because that place got really really boring.
Got to the stage where my only remaining challenge was solo'ing the end boss... karakaten or whatever he was called.
    Bleh.

For the moment, any accounts, trial or otherwise that existed can play now for free. Not sure if you can create new accounts yet, could be.

I tried the trial for a day or 2 in 2006, now i logged back in with that account and can go to the mainland and everything.

havent logged in in a few days coz ive been sick but id assume its still going like that.

Yup, you can still go to the mainland. It looks like it is going to stay that way till they get their billing system up and running again.
