A thread on the Final Fantasy forum got me thinking about this: What is your favourite end-of-game battle and why?

I have three that are hard to choose from:

1 - Nihilanth in Half Life.
2 - Sephiroth's One Winged Angel in Final Fantasy VII.
3 - Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal. No idea what her name was.

1 - Gigantic floating baby, teleportation vortexes, rocket launchers, psychic lightning and low gravity. Brilliant.

2 -Even if just for the sound track. This fight had to be one of the most atmospheric battles I've ever seen.

3 - I can't remember the name of the character, and its not important. She was a big evil bitch who got in my way. A party of 6 ridiculously high level characters taking on wave after wave after wave after wave of immensely powerful beings and pushed to their limit. A superbly dramatic finale.

    Zelda Ocarina of Time.

After a game of tennis me and Pig adjourned to the roof where we had beverages and biscuits, which somehow endly badly and trut my sword into his face.

After that i threw the pad on the floor sweating and sat back and enjoyed the credits as i earned them.

Windwaker had a great and really cinematic sword fight against Gannondorf as well... ends with you plunging the sowrd right in his head.

I liked the giant clockwork owl at the end of the original Sly Raccoon game.

And the battle at the end of Beyond Good and Evil was good as well... altough it gets fustrating when your controls get reveresed.

Oh.. and Mother Brain in Metroid is always a classic.

Metal Gear Solid - Fighting Liquid on top of Metal Gear bare-handed was just awesome!

Metal Gear Solid 3 - Taking on The Boss in a field full of flowers, with the theme song counting down to the place being blown up...so good.

Final Fantasy VI - Kefka was an excellent villain, not quite Sephiroth though! But he looked cool in the final battle and, since there was no opportunity to save after fighting the previous bosses, the stakes felt even higher.

Oooh yes that was very cool.

Oh yes... Dark Falz at the end of Phantasy Star Online was brilliant... and I loved how he got more transformations depending on the difficulty level.

And the Lavos battle at the end of Chronotrigger was brilliant too.

emot-argh.gif I bloody hated him. Magus was far more intimidating.

Kefka, nothing more and nothing less.

Oh and Wind Waker and any Resident Evil except 3.

    Agree with HL.

I also really enjoyed the Metriod Prime final fight. It took so long and was fitting ending to such a long game.

I thought fighting a hand in Super Smash Brothers Melee was good for a laugh.

    Rocket Knight Adventures
Last boss was a right bitch to beat however if you played the game on hard when you leave his exploding space ship in an escape pod he comes chasing after you. The only way to kill him is to avoid him until he burns up in the earths atmosphere.

    FFVII
Kefka was a better bad guy but the music for the Sephiroth battle was just excellent.

    Zone of Enders 2
Excellent boss fight that looked stunning. Fighting inside a giant sphere made of hexagons. The boss would pull the hexagons up and use them as weapons.

    Ikaruga
    Bit of a spoiler:
your weapons are disabled so all you can do is absorb the torrent of bullets this boss unleashes (and I mean torrent). When you have absorbed enough, you unleash the lasers only to kill the boss as well as yourself :(

    Suikoden 2
    Major spoiler:
Either killing your best friend who betrayed you in a duel or refusing to fight him. Either way you end up with him dying it your arms. A tragic end to an already tragic story.

Prince of Persia: The two thrones
Quite an easy boss but boy was it some spectacle. Looked fabulous.

    Gunstar Heroes
Last level was great all the old boss characters are back with new bosses before you face off against the final enemy.

    Legend of Zelda Wind Waker
Another absolutely stunning boss fight. Incredibly cinematic and satisfying.

    Resident Evil 2 and 3
Both the final bosses in these games were great. They just wouldn't give up and kept coming back even more horribly mutated than before. Very cinematic.

Thought the boss at the end of HL was dire and a real let down. The game lost a bit of charm when it went to zen.

As Mr. K said, Metal Gear Solid was awesome.

However my personal fave was Prince Of Persia: The Two Thrones, I mean that end sequence...in slo-mo...just wow. :)

That said the endings of the other two titles in the series were pretty cool too, especially the hidden ending to Warrior Within.

Let's see, is the last level of We Love Katamari counted? The boss is an entire continent which must be rolled up... not a battle technically, but superb none the less.
Sephrioth of course was stunningly epic, and beating him actually felt like an achievement, having gone through so much effort to get level 3 mime and knights of the round.
Last Collossus in SotC was also pretty good - felt appropriately huge and challenging (took me ages to perfect the final leap from arm to head). Not the best collossus in the game, mind, but excellent none the less.
I remember the space battle and boss at the end of Beyond and Good Evil to be wonderful, perfect end to a pretty perfect game.
This may be an overly nostalgic childhood memory but I also remember the final boss of Sonic 3d (yes, I said 3d) to be very good. I vaguely remember a cube like structure, and a boss with six different attacks, or something. Saying that, going back to the game today I'd probably recognise it's woefulness in technicolour glory.
And then the really really bad ones : I despised the end of God of War, felt the last fight to be unjust and frustrating. The fact that it wasted an entire evening very near to my Leaving Cert probably didnt help either.

How can you dislike the the final form of Nemisis... that was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this thread's title:confused:

I'm gonna have to pick PoP: TTT back up after reading this thread... I got stuck on one of the crappier boss battles and gave up (those 2 feckers directly after a chariot section)

I loved the final battle against giant baby bowser at the end of Yoshi's Island. Ended up playing through the tough final level loads of times just to fight him again.

One winged angel in FFVII was great too, I found the final battle too long drawn out in that game though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Not an end game boss as such... although he was one time but I'd say ragnaros in wow. Anyone that's been in a guild that had to work their way through molten core will know what I mean. After a few weeks of failed attempts then finally downing him and hearing 40 people cheering on vent was pretty cool.

Thought that was a great boss battle. Tough but great. Your not very lucky when it comes to bosses. I remember Omega Pirate in Metroid Prime giving you a hard time :)

I just have no patience these days.
Omega Pirate was a piece of piss on normal difficulty but fairly damn tough on hard... I managed to beat him after a few tries, but gave up on hard mode completely when I got to Meta Ridley:p
Had a quick blast at the boss battle in TTT just now, it isn't as tough as I first thought. I should be able to clear it easily enough if I get a chance to play without my damn flatmate yapping away about shopping....

I liked the giant mecha robotnik at the end of Sonic2, and silver sonic before that. I found it pretty tough back in the day.

As for others... the final boss in RE:4 was pretty good, even if i felt beating him was a fluke.

others that spring to mind is the
    • last boss from guardian hero advance,
    • Wiseman from NiGHTS [infact every boss in that game, bar jackel],
    • The boss in Legend of Zelda: link awakening
    • The final boss from Panzer dragoon zwei
    • And bruce the shark from Viewtiful Joe.

    Mine would have to be

Shenmue 2:The final way to beat him was so cinematic.
pokemon blue:when I beat the elite 4 after 20 times of trying I felt like had acheived something of great importance
Resi 4:The tentacle head thing was too much for me

Wind Waker - what a fantastic end battle :)
Metroid Prime as well - so tempted to replay it now!

    (so predictable!)

For those of you who haven't seen some of these battles (and may never see them), head over to YouTube and have a look around! Most of the ones mentioned are there!! :)

I just thought he paled in comparison to Birkin and the Tyrant from no.1

Sure Nemesis was always the threat, but he didnt seem that important as bad guys went... he reminded me of the 'main' enemy in RPG's that crop up all the time like Ultros in FF6 or something.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

I wasn't too crazy about the RE 3 boss either... it was just shoving batteries into place to kill him... although it is cool when she shoots it in the head before escaping.

Oh and I have to say I thought the giant floating baby in Half Life was rubbish as well.. god I hated Xen.

The boss at the end of Oposing Force was good though.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I liked Nemesis because he kept coming back for more just like a good hollywood bad guy. However i have to agree that Birkin and Mr. X were far better in Resi 2.

    Got some other ones:

R-type Delta: Special mention has to go to this because it features more sperm than an average porn film. After a rather tough boss you force unit is taken from you and you can't shoot. The enemy sends a torrent of sperm after you and all you can do is avoid them. However you force is still charging up so when it hits 100%, Kaboom! roll credits.

Kingdom Hearts: Great final boss. Very tough as well. Pity Kingdom Hearts 2 is very easy, the first game is up there with DMC and Ninja Gaiden.

Viewtiful Joe: Excellent 3 part boss fight. Love the first part where the six machine turns into a huge robot and you stomp around the world kind of like the boss on the moon in Yoshi's Island.

The final fights as either Marine or Predator in AvP were tough, and highly rewarding to finish.

MGS2: Im a big fan of that final fight atop the Fedral Hall against Solidus with the swords.

Just looking at the end of game boss for Radiant Silvergun on Youtube. Now that's a boss! I'm not good enough to get that far. Yet. Screw FFXII I'm playing radiant silvergun all today. Treasure are really showing off in that part of the game The PS1 would never have been able to handle something like that and they are throwing around difficult fo the saturn transparency effects.

My favourite end game battles would have to be from homeworld 2 and no one lives forever 2.

Homeworld 2 involved protecting your home planet against 3 big thingies that were dropping bombs on your population, very intense from the beginning and the population counter thing added to the desparation, excellent end to one of my favourite games ever, shame there won't be any sequels.

NOLF2 involved fighting against a bunch of super soldiers, which were basically parodies of the Uber Soldat from RTCW, tough as hell, not a traditional boss fight at all, they kept the comedy going right to the end with this one.

I must also mention ICO and SOTC, both had incredibly emotional final battles, in both cases I went in genuinely upset and wanted to pound the **** out of whatever it was I had to fight.
