Just wondering if anyone knows of an opensource alternative to the Quark design software?

Its not actually for me, a friend of mine was wondering if such a thing existed. I dont know what he used Quark for in the past (He was a graphic designer). I just said I'd post here and see did anyone have any ideas. I'll get more info tomorrow if it'd make it easier to suggest something.

In my experience, you're not going to find anything he'll be happy with. He'll use whatever you suggest for a few minutes, then start criticising it with lengthy arguments that boil down to: "it's not Quark". Similarly, people who have used Photoshop won't use the GIMP (because "it's not Photoshop") and people who have been brought up on Excel don't like OpenOffice.org (because... you get the idea).

I could be wrong - and I'll be pleasantly surprised to hear it if I am.

+1 for Scribus. It's got some very annoying behaviour, but it'll do the job well enough, so long as it isn't crazy complicated.

oscarBravo I agree with you wholeheartedly, but having never used Photoshop, I still can't stand Gimp

gimpshop - its a little flaky but an attempt to dock all the gimp toolbars to look like photoshop

http://www.getpaint.net/ is a nice light paint shop pro type again with the floating toolbars, but they are nicely transparent.

and yes paint DotNet (as the name implies) only runs on windows with dot net
and yes that means you have that painful print wizard that makes you want to save a file and then use another app to print it.
