Ohohoho...this could get really dodgy for my bottom line very quickly indeed. Sony has announced details of its 'PLAYSTATION Store', for PS3's online service. Here's some pictures:

The store will offer downloadable PS3 e-distribution games (like Blast Factor, Criminal Crackdown etc.), free demos and trailers etc. but most attractive of all (for me), is that they're going to put PSone games up for download from day one. Here's a list of the first downloadables in Japan:
    Blast Factor (Sony, Action)
    flOw (Sony, Action)
    Lemmings 2 (Sony, Puzzle)
    Kazuo (Sony, Puzzle)
    Puzzle (Sony, Puzzle)
Mainichi Issho (Sony, Action) -no demo available-
Ridge Racer 7 Demo (Bandai Namco, Rennspiel)

    PSone games:

    Biohazard Director's Cut (Capcom)
Konami Antics MSX Collection Vol. 1 (Konami)
Konami Antics MSX Collection Vol. 2 (Konami)
    Bishi Bashi Special (Konami)
    Arc The Lad (Sony)
    Jumping Flash! (Sony)
    Everybody's Golf 2 (Sony)
    Silent Bomber (Bandai Namco)
    Tekken 2 (Bandai Namco)
    Mr. Driller (Bandai Namco)

These PSone downloads are going to kill my wallet.. Apparently they'll sell for $5-$10. They'll add about ten every month, apparently. Also worth mentioning that the same downloadable will play on both your PS3 and PSP - initially only your PSP, funnily enough, but around the end of the year they plan to update the PS3 to allow it to play them too.

The other downloadable games will sell for up to $15. Apparently you can also share them with 5 other friends for no extra cost, but the logistics of that haven't been explained i.e. is it like Xbox Live where you can sign in and download on a friend's machine, but not play them under other accounts, or more open than that?

Jumping Flash ain't dull! I've a feeling we might get some different stuff in the West, though.

By the looks of that screenshot, Mainichi Issho is free, hence the lack of demo.

    Bishi Bashi Special!

Best multiplayer game ever. no other game lets you inflate your afro on the dance floor.

So as a PSP owner who won't be buying a PS3 for a while yet... when will this service be available to us?

There'll be a direct-download service for PSP, but they haven't specified when yet. I'd guess/hope by the end of the year.

By the way, here's a video of the store being used from Sony's Gamers' Day:

For good measure, here's also a video of the general XMB interface. The video stuff is very cool, and very fast:

What that video doesn't show is that when they came back to the Casino Royale trailer, instead of picking up where they left off on the PS3, they used a PSP and the 'Remote Play' feature on the PS3 that lets you browse and watch your media on your PS3, from your PSP! So they watched the rest of the trailer on the PSP. This is done wirelessly over the local network, but later they'll enable this over the internet, so you could remotely access your PS3's media from your PSP anywhere as long as you're at a wifi hotspot.
