Could be wrong, but don't these have poor reliabilty in general ?

Friend of mine has one and spends a great deal of her time waiting for the AA to arrive. Avoid.

Yup, I've never heard anything positive about them yet. Most people who get one seem to mysteriously change again fairly soon. I wonder why?

The 1.8 eats head gaskets as far as I know unless kept with coolant (is his a K-Series engine?) and there's better cars like it around. Something like a Nissan X-Trail

In my line of work we call people like her unreasonably unlucky..once more and in car terms your off the road.

Certainly the earlier models had lots of reliability concerns, but as far as I know, the newer ones post the minor facelift in 2004 have a much better track record. The best bet is a facelifted version with the new TD4 engine, avoid the older 1.8 petrol at all costs as it was prone to head gasket failure.

Car was in Garage more days than on the road during the first year and she still couldn't get Land Rover Dealer to give her, her money back or even a replacement! That was about 6 months ago, probably on No. 15 or 16 by now! So if you really want a Freelander don't buy it from the dealer in Liverpool wher she got her's....

    Avoid.
Also, The FreeLander has a famously bad/unbelievable record in the EuroNCAP crash tests (especially for a fake 4x4, driven only in cities). The Driver door pillars folded in like a broken deckchair in every test. Was 2-3 stars out of 5.

The new one is supposed to be more of a mini Range Rover Sport/Discovery. lets see if thats true.

Didn't Top Gear do a crash test review on these and found that they were as strong as a wet tissue!
The Euro NCAP results ain't great either...

The honest John review isn't encouraging either (mush already said here)

My mother bought a '00 diesel model in Feb this year.
She thought it was ok. I hated it, uncomfortable on long trips and has very little space in the back for baggage. Didn't feel safe when I was talking it across fields, was waiting for it to get stuck.
Dad hated it, last week he changed it for a '00 Nissan patrol.

Mate in work has a 04 1.8. Head gasket went after 20k miles. On repair an oil seal leaked repeatedly for months, eventually dealer replaced upper engine casing. Now he's got a cracked exhaust manifold. Still loves it though...?

    Horses for courses.

My sister has a facelifted TD4, some sort of special edition, and loves it. Had it just under a year and it's given no trouble.
