Fireman loses fingeres at French league game

Did anyone else watch the Nice - Marseilles game live on Setanta last night. There was a terrible incident at the start of the game when a fireman was seriously injured discarding a firework. Officials and fellow firemen spent 10 minutes trying to locate two of his fingers on the pitch! I think the commentary team were playing dumb because they were wondering what they were looking for, but it was blatantly obvious because tv pictures showed the fireman being brought from the pitch in shock holding his mangled hand and also a close up of his glove in tatters!
They then also showed a crestfallen colleague leaving the pitch with bits of his fingers in his palm. He was in no rush because he knew they were useless the state they were in.
It was awful to watch. The culprit responsible for throwing the 'bomb' should be jailed.

Still, crazy Europeans!! I don't get the whole firework thing.

Flares and bangers are de-rigeur it seems, it can proberly be traced back the medieval times. Back then public gatherings seemed to be an occassion for firey spectacle.

It was a homemade firebomb according to the BBC, he thought it was a flare.

A horrible injury to sustain.

Flares, in the correct hands (absolutely no pun intended) can add a great deal to the atmosphere at a match, a great deal.

But then you have fools trying to imitate others, and then this kind of thing happens.

Horrific thing to happen to the fireman. Poor guy, just unbelievable that this sort of thing would happen at a football match. I mean, what sort of sick f*ck brings a homemade bomb to a game?

The police kept the entire Marseilles end (from which the bomb was lobbed) in at the end and searched every one of them with sniffer dogs but no word as yet as to whether they detained/arrested/charged anyone.

As pointed out above , he thought it was a flare and it turns out it was a home made firebomb .
