I'm pretty big into any type of death metal, and yes genuinely. Not to "look cool" or whatever you reckon people listen to it for. Morbid Angel got me into it originally, and I have to say I love all of their older stuff with Dave Vincent and Gateways To Annihilation too. Personally, I find the riff work, the drumming and even the lyrics is very interesting. I find that its a nice change from the softer genres. It is good to listen to some pure aggression with a meaning behind it, in Morbid Angel's case it is mainly religious.

Obviously this is opposed to the likes of Cannibal Corpse, who just sing gratuitously about killing. That stuff I just cannot take seriously, although I have to laugh at some of their song titles like Blowtorch Slaughter, Hammer Smashed Face etc. Completely OTT!

Other bands I enjoy listening to are Opeth, Obituary, Death, Atheist, Carcass, Decapitated, Cynic, Cryptopsy etc. They all have their own mix of aggression, pure technical ability and catchy songs that I really enjoy from music. That is all it is down to really.

just getting back into death metal again after a long break from all things metal, was around in the late 80s early 90s , a very exciting time for thrash and dm, at the time was into Death ,Morbid Angel ,Kreator, Autopsy, Carcass etc however as the 90s rolled on I lost touch as nothing inspired me.
Now I am trying to replace my cassettes with CDs of some of the classics but would be interested if there is anything essential out there that I have missed over the past 10 years (I'm talking on a par with Slowly we rot, Leprosy, Blessed are the sick, Beneath the remains)not into black metal at all ,
also what do ye make of Isis?

you ,might like EARLY inflames, subterannean and lunar strain albums. Isis are great for atmospheric music, i love oceanic
maybe try some necrophagist, though its a bit more heavier than some of the stuff mentioned

I never regard any album as "essential" - however Pestilence's reissue of Mind Reflections (which I have), is definietly a stocking filler. Aswell as

    Aborted
Deicide (who have really matured as a band)
    Vader
    Obituary - yay reissues :)
    Decapitated
    Krisiun

hmm who else - Immolation and Malevolent Creation (why the hell not)

I am sure there are loads I have missed out on, but I am hungover, so nuts to list making

Isis are excellent, great for some kinda chilled listening.

As for some newer stuff, Opeth are absolutely essential, aswell as that I recommend that you check out the following bands:

    Gojira
    Mithras
    Meshuggah
    Strapping Young Lad
    Cryptopsy
    Alarum

Oh, as for Gojira, check out this! ****ing incredible band! :D

I genuinely think this is one of the best threads ive ever started on Boards.ie

Its been raging now almost 2 months with extremely valued opinions from everyone. I think we can finally agree the answer to the retorical question I posed at the beginning of this thread is 'yes' as that might eliminate the death threats from the more finantical of you!:D

    To the Isis questioner.
They are a truly amazing band.

Lots of replies here with death metal bands would be more black metal imho.

Death (the first death metal band) were ok. Are the Seps considered death metal?

    GnR ftw! (kidding)

Do you know the difference? At all?

    To the Isis questioner.

Isis are OK. I'm sick of them now, they have once song and they have repeated it on every release (on every colour of vinyl that the same album is repeated on over and over again). I enjoyed their Music Centre gig but when I saw them at a festival over in England during the summer it was like watching paint dry. My advice, buy one album, enjoy it and buy no more because it ruins your enjoyment.

    ...
I don't think that at all, each album being different.
Different emotions and themes in different notes, swirling.
    Different themes, usually interconecting.

    * Mosquito Control introduces the first major theme, the mosquito, as well as control towers (see cover of reissue).
    * The Red Sea offers the first glimpses of both the water and female character themes.
    * Celestial and SGNL>05 reintroduce the control towers and female character, as well as the mosquito through the artwork.
    * Oceanic reintroduces the water and female themes through a specific story.
    * Panopticon reintroduces the tower implicitly: see panopticon.
    * In the Absence of Truth expands upon previous themes, specifically the feminine character. Mosquitos are again present in the album artwork.

I supppose it is like each album tells a story to me, with there being just one song per album, with different chapters.
Themes ranging from political to love and incest.
I don't think they are near the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Hmmm, those themes sound awfully contrived. I don't see the story thing at all I have to say. I just hear the same song structures, techniques, and rawr vocals and it doesn't sustain my attention. It just seems like Neurosis by numbers but not as good.

The only album that sounds different to me is the Oceanic Remixes double CD :D

In fairness, this statement is a little confusing:

I really don't know what you mean to say by that.

Fair enough, i should have made my sarcasm a bit more obvious. My mates thought it was funny. :(

we were in bruxelles in dublin one night and this really hot burd passed that same comment when Slayer came on and my self righteous mate sizzler, still gave her one...

Anyway back on topic, has anyone mentioned King Diamond yet?

What the hell are you talking about? Your posts on this thread seem nonsensical at best, off-topic trolling at worst. Cut it out.

Their sound is a mix of styles. Personally, I find the best Death Metal is that which mixes things up. Death had a lot of progressives touches in their music.
