Irish ISP IP Address ranges?

    Hi,

    I have a strange question - does anyone know how to find out the IP address ranges used by the main Irish IP ISPs? Someone I know is running an ad campaign on a UK site that is supposed to be targetted at an Irish audience, but they appear to be missing some big Irish players like Digiweb and NTL for example (the ad doesn't appear if you are logged on from those ISPs). I googled around but could only find discussion of AS numbers, which I am not familiar with - is it possible to get from an AS number to a range of ip addresses?

    Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

    Cheers,
    C

    There must be a way to do it, I know how to do it with American ISP's.

    I'm sure you know this but the list of AS numbers of ISP's connected to INEX are here... https://www.inex.ie/about/memberlist

    Perhaps you should give INEX an e-mail and ask if they have the subnet allocations for all of the ISP's they're connected to, I'm sure that they have the information at hand.

    There are databases that map IPs to locations, but they're hit-and-miss. For example, I just looked up a WestNet address in hostip.info, and it told me that it's based in Castlebar. Looking up the same address in ip2location.com tells me it's in London.

    Ironically, I'm on a Netsource DSL connection now, in Ballina Co Mayo - I looked up the address, and hostip.info told me I was in Ballina Co Tipp!

    HostIP may be looking at the owner information of the ip, where as ip2location is looking at where the ip space is ...I'm assuming here westnet get out onto the net at packet exchange.

    ftp://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc/membership/alloclist.txt

    Look under the section starting with ie.

    that list might not be entirely accurate - its missing eircom's original 159.134/16 allocation for a start...

    159 wasn't originally assigned by RIPE, that's probably why it's missing there. Here are Eircoms current advertised routes:

    Hi,

    Thanks to everyone for their help. What I did in the end was start with the basic INEX list as mentioned above...

    https://www.inex.ie/about/memberlist

    From this list I chose the ones I know to be big retail ISPs - BT Ireland, Clearwire Ireland, Digiweb, Eircom Net, imag!ne, Irish Broadband, Magnet Networks, Smart Telecom and NTL Telewest (see note below). I also added in one more ISP that I know is a big player in Ireland but doesn't appear to exchange on INEX - UTV Internet. For each of these ISPs I used their AS number to get a list of advertised prefixes from this site (example for BT Ireland is shown) :-

    http://www.lerfjhax.com/as/2110

    This gives the following list. Note that these are not all public dialup/broadband connections - some of the larger providers advertise large Irish companies IP ranges as well - but from the point of view of whats Irish this is fine. It would also be worth adding in HEANET to catch the colleges.

    NTL Ireland - the AS listed by INEX is actually the UK NTL. Irish NTL has been sold to UPC/UCG and from their AS6830, known Irish addresses come from these ranges :-

    * 89.100.0.0/15
    * 89.100.0.0/16
    * 89.101.0.0/16

    There are probably others on that UPC page that belong to Ireland, but those 3 ranges cover the IP addresses of people I know using NTL in Dublin. Note that those ranges also list explicitly as NTL Ireland on Ripe, e.g. http://www.ripe.net/whois?form_type=simple&full_query_string=&searchtext=89.101.0.0%2F16&do_search=Search

    Is it by looking up lists like these that the likes of ITunes and Setanta Broadband Sports can stop Irish broadband users buying online products aimed at the US Market?

    (if this is considered hikacking the thread, please ignore).

    They usually use a service like GeoIP, which is basically a list of IP addresses sorted by country/city etc.

    Phibsboro, feel free to add our 88.81.96.0/19 to that list.
