Figures published in the Houses of the Oireachtas estimates for 2007 indicate that TDs will receive more than €1,000 for every day they sit in the Dáil.

According to today's Irish Independent, the average basic wage for a TD will increase to more than €103,000, while a golden handshake, amounting to €4.7m, will be paid to TDs and Senators who lose their seats in next year's general election.

The total cost of running Leinster House next year is expected to amount to €122m, according to the figures.

Wages for TDs, Senators and Members of the European Parliament will run to €23m while €13m is being put aside for expenses and €19m for politicians' secretaries.

The average yearly wage for a TD reached €100,000 this year.

If the Dáil sits for the same number of days it has this year then the daily pay-packet for a TD will average €1,070 a day.

Question on the 'golden handshake', why do we have one? I always thought if your out, your out. Obviously this is not the case. How do the most incompetent people in this country make over a €1000 and justify it?

I say bring in a comission based job the better the economy trhe better they get paid. The gov might actually do something apart from exchange insults all day.

A clear case of the lunatics running the asylum imo, how else can you justify voting yourselves these pay rises AND a golden handshake for when you are "sacked" by the electorate you are menat to have served. Nice work if you can get it!

no, because that would be €365,000, but the original quote says:
The average yearly wage for a TD reached €100,000 this year.

E1k a day for each day the Dail is in session (which is not very often!). I suppose most of the rest of the time the TD's are still working away hard on their real job: keeping the constituents sweet so they'll be reelected.
