You'd get a better response in the Broadband forum. Some Chorus/NTL/UPC users might be able to help.

if you are on broadband the slowest component you could have is a bad wifi connection falling back to 1mb and you'd know about that,

also you didn't mention if the computer seemed slow

your internet connection is shared with others back at the exchange, it's called contention, so if someone nearby is leeching everyone suffers.

also if you are only looking at one site there is the slashdot effect, where a site becomes popular and gets hammered

if it your internet works but speeds up /slows down from time to time don't fiddle with the setting as you won't be able to free a blockage / bottleneck caused by heavy traffic by others upstream,

all in all, the service is dire, last night the entire thing was offline from about 8pm in the eveing uintil this morning. No response from DHCP server according to the modem.

This happens occasionally, and if it happens after about 5, doesnt get fixed until start of the next working day. rediculous.

occasionalyl it will also suffer from fragmented packets, resulting in you beeing able to ping any server no problem, but packets larger than a few bytes on the majority of its routes outbound end up failing. i had to setup a proxy server on one of my new york servers which was luckily about the only route not affected about 2 weeks ago, and routed all my web traffic to that.
