Is that the one from the scene in Father Ted where Kevin (Tommy Tiernan goes home on the bus and gets depressed listening to the song radio?) The last time this thread was done, it would be that one, whatever it is.

I think it was used in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet film.

Ha ha I can never take that song seriously again after it being in Fr. Ted. What a scene.

The saddest song of all time has to be "Ruth Marie" by Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters / Sun Kil Moon fame. It is written from the perspective of a dying old woman who is living against her will in a nursing home, singing to her daughters as she sees them for the last time before she dies... my god, even thinking about it is welling me up. He could sing the phone book and make it sad.

I've been scouring youtube for it but I can only find someone doing a cover version so I don't know what its like.

If that doesn't work, Katy Song by Red House Painters is also pretty sad:
