There were 21k at the final last year wasnt it, and its been going up every year? Was it not possible to have it in croke park this year? Its a bit awkward but I'm sure itd be better than having 15k people without a ticket for the game..

There were bigger crowds at the Leinster Seniors Cup Final when i was on my SCT (1993-1996)

Croke Park is used for GAA club finals on Paddy's day. I know the match is on the 18th but they still wouldnt let them use it due to pitch damage.

I remember the 1992 or 1993 year - think it was the 1992 Cup year, that Terenure played Blackrock in the q-finals in Donnybrook and it was a draw and the replay had to be played in Lansdowne Road the demand was so big and thats for a quarter-final.

right you are!! Its only for Parents and Past Pupils though, and its for 500 out of the 2000 tickets allocated to the school! The rest are going to students, team members families, teachers etc.

Having a game that attracts 20000+ in a stadium that holds 7000 is a bit ridiculous IMO.
The RDS could have been a better option..................

There is one ticket per person in St. Michaels, they have 500 extra plus those that arent claimed which will be lottoed off to anyone in the school who wanst them

In my many years of supporting schools rugby, I notice that the way the tourniment is played seems quite unfair in modern day rugby.
In the past, rugby was always seen as a gentlemans game, at that and upper class game. Times have moved on, people have moved forward, rugby now, in this day and age, is played by every walk of life, upper class, middle class, working class, foreigners, travellers, basicly its a more or less common sport.
I see that the Cup, leinster Schools Cup that is, is unfair. Totally unfair.
I think the cup should be played like a real tourniment, and stop schools like Blackrock, terenure and belvo claiming the cup every single year. Schools in section A and Section B have it a lot harder. Maby the big teams should be seeded in a group, or all the teams mixed up into groups to qualify for the main tourniment, to give every school a chance.
There are schools like Marian College, St. Conleths, De La Salle, CUS who have to qualify by winning 2 previous tourniments before they even make it to play a single match in the main cup and by that time, injury etc is a huge factor. it is a completly unfairly set up compitition, it needs to be revised, there are fare more rugby teams that could win the cup, but their not even given a chance.
Do people think its unfair, or should Blackrock win it for another 65 times before people realise its a one horsed race with the same schools every year?

in all respect your wrong in what you say, its fair as it is those teams from section B and A all have a chance of getting into the senior cup and those who are good enough do leaving those who arent to take part in other competitions like the vinny murray etc.... why would you want to watch the likes of ST Mary's or Rock play Conleths a school with like 30 people in 6th year 10 of which i hear are girls now! like they dont have the same numbers or resources and those who are good enough play, it would make the senior cup far to long and boring if we were to play all the teams and intrest would quickly fade until the semi-s and the final so it would just cost the Leinster Branch too much to pay for Match officials etc... and would take up far too much time for leaving cert students.and as it stands they all get a chance look at Kilkenny this year for example those who can compete at that standard do and they do very well.
Last point about it being a farse that they may play badly in one match and their gone, thats what sport is about and it builds the kids into better players but if they get knocked out in the 1st round or quarter finals they can enter into the Plate competition. So its as fair as it can be. the only thing i have against it is their is far to much emphasis on it and with setanta sports showing it makes it so much more competitive which leads to even more school rivalry and its only a matter of time that another annabells incident occurs!!

Michaels on course for the double this year. Beat newbridge 12-10 in the junior cup earlier. Into the final where they'll probably play rock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,078 ✭✭✭theCzar

Sometimes (nay, often) demand outstrips supply. Its a first for the SCT afaik, but circumstances are different this year. Just have to put up with it. Its not "ridiculous", its unfortunate but unavoidable. :(

I'm abroad at the moment, so can't be sure, but I'm guessing its on Setanta? So at least you can go to the pub and watch it, and presumably get drunk and have a fight with some red-faced eejit in his fifties singing the old school songs.

(oh yeah: gwan Michaels, mighty mighty Michaels. Ahem.)

There was a very good Article in yesterday's Sunday Business Post on school's rugby if anyone got their hands on it.

Also, congrats to Michael's JCT! Great result.

AFAIK the Senior Final is on live on Setanta.

micheals can count thmeselves lucky to have beaten newbridge. the result could have easily gone the other way. And how come micheals keep invading the pitch after matches? In my opinion it should be stopped

    School solidarity...
and probably alcohol in the case of the past pupils

Well newbridge have a good js team, played very well today. It was always gonna be a tough one.

About the pitch invasions, the supporters make the effort to go to all these matches and I think should be able to celebrate with the team.

Ah I suppose you have a point alright. But I just think that it is a bit unfair on the team that has lost, and Donnybrook is in bad enough condition without all these invasions!

I think the donnybrook pitch has held up quite well this year. They're having to put some sand on it in places but in general its in good nick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 738 ✭✭✭AndyP

Played less than half the matches than in previous seasons there. Used to be a game a day and sometimes even two a day, a schools game and a J club game later that night. So thats the main reason it held up.

Won't have to worry about a Michael's pitch invasion against Clongowes
The Michael's crew will be heading for the exits after 50 minutes :D

Rock i find are the worst offennders at the pitch invasions -- invading even before final whistle , in what sometimes are close matches -- so don't blame michaels for this .

didnt like a few things in that article...but here is my main one...
Blackrock College, the relevance of which to Irish life can be gauged by the fact that it is the alma mater of both Eamon De Valera and Ryan Tubridy, is by far the dominant school in the competition’s history. It won the first competition in 1887 and has picked up 64 of the 118 titles since. In fact, ‘‘Rock’’ is probably the strongest rugby school anywhere in Ireland or Britain, with a ferocious record in ‘‘friendlies’’ against sides from Munster, Ulster and England.

my problem with that is, i would say its colstons academy in england, who although last years blackrock team defeated them(colstons were missing a lot of players) this school is amazing at rugby! most of its players playing international and all the first team playing provincial(min) is the norm with them...
although they are fiends for recruiting players! ;) much worse then any irish school...

    geraghty went there amongst others

they are just savage..last year at one point i think they have lost it now but they had over 50 consecutive wins...no losses for their senior XV...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,217 ✭✭✭LFC5Times

But thats because Colstons scholarship players to the school on a serious rate not like Blackrock who might scholarship 1/2 players every couple of years.

A couple of years ago when Geraghty and his older brother where playing for Colstons there team had something like 7/8 different nationalities in their team and they openly admitted to scholarshipping players from other schools in England.

Colstons is more like a professional academy/school.

In fairness it was written by an ex-Michaels guy, who played scrum half on t SCT in 1991 when they lost to Clongowes. Any praise of Blackrock will be very minimal and would be well deserved!! ;)

The article showed that over the last 25 years, Rock,Nure and Clongowes have been the 3 most successful schools re: cup wins and finals contested.

yeh...it is an academy... its called colstons academy not school...to my knowledge anyway...i played against them...****ing insane match...they were missing a few players and we had a full team and we still couldnt beat them..althought we did hold the lead until last 10 or so minutes where a missed tackle gave them a try...then we bottled.....:P

and yeh they admit it and are proud of it! they do it and do it well! if anything it brings in talent to the country, and creates more cometition for the other schools! pushes them to train harder and better, to have a chance against them! i know if i was a rival school beside colstons i would train the ass off my plaers to give them a chance. increasing the skill and power levels in the league....(i was also very impressed that colstons are broadening their training to include alot of rowing training...which honestly is one of the hardest sports in the world-amazing for wel...everything!)

i reckon belvo for next year.
There'll be 8-9 of the 06/07 team returning , with a few ireland/leinster u18 caps already (nermin lovic , tom sexton and others)

It's also the team which won the J's but as its been said that makes little/no difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,608 ✭✭✭themont85

Belvo will be good along with Gonzaga, don't bother with Rock ****e unless they get something out of their 5th years or some new recruits.

But the best team next year, CBC Monkstown, I'll be putting a lot on them especially considering they are usually on really long odds.

From what I hear St.Marys college have an incredible team this year, they are the most represented school on leinster and were the top try scorers on leinster's recent trip to South Africa. One major problem though, no outhalf. other than that their team is supposed to be flawless

Had a look at the match on setanta today since nothing else was on. Have to agree Terenure were the better team but they have to learn to play till the whistle goes or they wont get far. Belvo werent that impressive nothing fancy just stick it in the corner and hope for the best.

And for christ sake whats with all the complicated line out moves some of them are just ridiculous over the top when a simple dummy and throw would do i saw so many line outs go amiss because of these ridiculous moves they had.

i plated 4 wesley in tjhe schools cup this year and made it 2 the quarter final after goin through 2 sectionA qualifyers.if the sectionA and B schools have good enough teams they should do well in the cup.
