I agree that there is a lot more to cars than reliability but reliability should be at least a fundamental principle of any car made i.e. get you to where you are going. Some manufactures these days seem to have sacrificed this in the name of less important features.

Remember according to most people a car is the second most important purchase in their life aside from a house. Style, flair, gadgetry, handling that puts a smile on your face, whatever, are all very well but absolutely of no use to you if the car spends more time in the garage with the service manager scratching his head, than on the road where it is meant to be.

BTW I didn't vote either as I have no first hand knowledge of Renaults.

The problem is though, the anti renault camp like to make out that the side of every road in the country is littered with thousands of abandoned broken down renaults, like some sort of mad max style apocalypse.

At the end of the day, most Renault drivers seem happy with their cars and I'd be willing to bet that of the ones with problems, a lot buy again. If they were all breaking and were terrible to own, there wouldnt be any 2nd hand ones around and the renault dealers wouldnt have loads fo 2nd hand ones.

Also on the subject of reps being stuck, is the laguna not a bit of a rep mobile? ~I woudl imagine a decent % of lagunas sold go to reps. Personally i'd imagine , and would prefer personally, that reps would be willing to put up with one or two break downs in their careers, to be driven around in a nice comfortable car because thats going to affect them more than a break down in a company car that they dont own or couldnt care less if it breaks and has to be replaced.

I have to say i've driven my aunts 05 mondeo and found it fairly awkward and uncomfortable. I aslo just flately didnt like the feel of the car and it int a patch on driving my safrane.

Fair play to you, I wish more users shared you level of common sense.

I bet at least 50% of the negative voters also have no knowledge, but they are just going on some make-believe trash they heard in the pub.

I have owned two renaults, neither ever gave a major issue.
So those who voted that 'ALL renaults are scrap' are fundamentally wrong, just on the basis of my personal, first hand experience alone.

Was moving house over the weekend and therefore am late getting into this thread.

I've owned lots of Renaults, wife has one, mother has one, father has one - you get the picture. We buy them not because we are masochistic but because they are bloody good cars, reliable (my family have owned 17 in total and never had any problems with any of them). The cars are packed with extras, are stylish and most importantly, Renault lead the way when it comes to safety.

I voted that they are just as good as other European cars and not because I think Jap cars are the be all and end all. I've owned a corolla and it was not any more reliable than my renaults and it cost more to fix when it went wrong (which it did on four occasions, which is four occasions more than all my renaults put together).

This thread is full of people who put their misinformed prejudices on their sleeves. Junkyard, the motor industry man, says he wouldn't touch a renault. Well I wouldn't touch a Fiat, an Opel, a VW or another corolla after bad experiences with them but thats not to say they are all crap. It just comes down to personal choice. So if you want a good value for money motor, buy a renault and then you'll have the right to post your views on the cars.

Having grown up with Renaults, I have a fondness for the marque, (most probably to do with 5 Turbos and Alpine rally cars etc.) but would say that they started to lose their way somewhat, from the mid 80's onwards. The 4, 5, 12 & 16 models were all very good cars in their day.

Most that followed for the next two decades were pretty ordinary, with a limited lifespan. If I recall rightly the service bills on same were higher in the late 80's than my Mitsubishi's were well into the 90's.

Nowadays, they are probably on a par with much of their mainstream european rivals. To their credit they have always kept a french flavour to their cars in terms of ride and comfort levels. Styling was also more daring, in keeping with french design, something Peugeot and Citroen lost sight off and became bland euroboxes. Citroen having realised this error are trying to redress same with the C6 & C4.

Renault have also shown leadership with safety features - airbags, crumple zones etc (although Subaru's all-wheel-drive system & engine layouts/lower centre of gravity, throughout the range, is arguably a more noble philosophy in terms of safety with the added traction, grip levels etc). Renault have also been responsible for the advent of MPV type cars, whils't not my cup of tea, they are highly practical for family motoring.

Bottom line, if they appeal to you - go ahead and buy one NEW, at least that way you have the peace of mind of a longer term warranty. A used one, may not prove to be a shrewd move. On the other hand their collaboration & financial stake in Nissan may result in a brighter future.

ive had alot of experiance with peugeot and they were/are crap.
if you buy a renault you will lose your shirt on it, the complex electrics will fail after the warranty runs out and you will be paying 000' for ecus for various units in the car. hell even mercedes have major problems on their recent cars with regards to electrics and mercedes is an innovater, renault merely copies what mercedes does on lesser cars. businessmen dont skip a beat if their sl needs a new throttle slide at 2 grand, but somehow something tells me a megane owner wont be happy if he gets the same bill..
also the residuals are crap. steer clear..

I and the wife have had between us:

Audi 80 Turbo D - Reliable enough but very heavy steering and not that fast.
Ford Escort Diesel - Heap of crap, electrics failing all the time and all the power of that guy in the Mr Muscle ad.
Peugeot 309 D - Ugly as sin, engine fantastic, started to leak and rust a bit after 12 years, now 14 years old and still used by my mechanic as a ""courtesy car" :)
Citroen Xantia TD - in 4 years a starter motor, a few tyres and a new battery. Brilliant comfortable car, more comfortable than a top of the range Merc and RELIABLE !!!!!!.
Citroen ZX 1.4 petrol: Nothing wrong, but a bit underpowered and ugly.

It is strange with cars that entire manufacturers get branded as "reliable" or "unreliable".

In comparison, people take a far more scientific view of tractors. E.g. the MF 390 is viewed as great, while the 4200 isn't, or pre 1995 Ford/NewHollands are regarded as troublesome, while post 95 ones are not. Likewise every model is regarded as having certain weak points.

It is perfectly plausible that the Clio might be a great car, while the Laguna 1.9 diesel is a steaming heap of rubbish (literally) .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭junkyard

The Clio is probably the best of the bunch its a pity the rest of the range is so bad and unsaleable, even the vans aren't great either.

I find your outlook very amusing.

You consistantly knock Renault/peugeot/citroen/fiat/alfa because of reliability, but you then state you are interested in buying a Porsche Cayenne! Porsche who currently come LAST in the reliability index ;)
