    Darren Randolph (Charlton Athletic)
    Shane Supple (Ipswich Town)
    Kevin Foley (Luton Town)
    Lewis Emanuel (Luton Town)
Sean St Ledger (Preston North End)
    Alex Bruce (Ipswich Town)
    Paddy Mc Carthy (Leicester City)
    Joseph O’Cearuill (Arsenal)
    Darron Gibson (Royal Antwerp)
    Stephen Mc Phail (Cardiff City)
    Joe Gamble (Cork City)
    Kevin Deery (Derry City)

    Darren Potter (Wolves)
    Stephen Hunt (Reading)
    Alan O’Brien (Newcastle United)
    Lee Frecklington (Lincoln City)
    Anthony Stokes (Falkirk)
    Andy Keogh (Scunthorpe)
    Roy O’Donovan (Cork City)
    Stephen Ward (Bohemians)

    Billy Clarke (Ipswich Town)

Surprised there are only 4 eL players, and none from Drogs or Shels. I just hjope Roy and Joe are withdrawn if there is any chance of UEFA Cup qualification at that stage.

Havent heard of a few players there, namely Frecklington, Emmanuel, O Cearruill and Kevin Foley.

I'm suprised you haven't heard of Foley as he has been in a couple of senior Ireland squads under Stan. O'Cearruill joined Arsenal in the summer. He got released by Watford and the Irish management know about him for a while now. As soon as he joins Arsenal he gets his first ever call up and straight into the U21s...

The first 2 lads I haven't a clue about. Stan granny hunting. I find it ridiculous that if Frecklington was Irish born I'm absolutely certain he'd be nowhere near this squad.

    Ward is injured.

With all due respect there'd be blue murder if he'd called up half a dozen profile eircom League players this close to the end of the season.

Even to look at the ones that are there - Ward can play if fit cos Bohs have nothing to play for, Derry and Gamble have hardly set the league on fire. Devlin to his credit acknowledged that there was an issue with getting players released for the game.

I'd imagine if this game was on at a different time of the year you'd see a different profile of player selected

Where has Paddy Kenny gone from the list, is injured or is he being dropped as a consequence of that performance in Cyprus

Whatever about Deery, as I havent seen enough of him, but Joe Gamble is easily one of the best central midfielders in the eL, and would walk staright into any eL team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,056 ✭✭✭applehunter

Gamble has not shown the form of last season and players like Stuart Byrne or Barry Molloy have shown more consistency and better discipline IMO.

But he did give the outstanding midfield display of the season in the Setanta Cup final against Drogheda.

Jesus, I know the CCFC support has a split in it, but can you fellas agree on anything?

Stuey Byrne has had a shíte season imo.

    Scotland squad:

    Mark Brown (Inverness Caledonian Thistle)
    Paul Gallacher (Norwich City)

    Kirk Broadfoot (St Mirren)
    Gordon Greer (Kilmarnock)
    Jay McEveley (Blackburn Rovers)
    Steven Smith (Rangers)
    Andy Webster (Wigan Athletic)
    Steven Whittaker (Hibernian)

    Charlie Adam (Rangers)
    Scott Brown (Hibernian)
    Stephen Pearson (Celtic)
    Michael Stewart (Hibernian)
    Kevin Thomson (Hibernian)
    Shaun Maloney (Celtic)

    Kris Boyd (Rangers)
    Chris Clark (Aberdeen)
    Lee Miller (Aberdeen)
    Steven Naismith (Kilmarnock)

Now that is a very strong squad. Assuming they all turn up this is probably the strongest team:

    Gallacher
    Whittaker - Webster - Broadfoot - Smith
    Maloney - Thomson - Brown - Adam
    Boyd - Naismith

All regular first team players. Gallacher is no.1 at Norwich. Whittaker is a very highly rated right back in Scotland. Smith is a regular at left back for Rangers. Webster recently signed for Wigan and started their last couple of games. Thomson and Brown have an excellent partnership at Hibs and are always being linked with Celtic. Adam is a regular under Le Guen too and has been one of their better players. Maloney was SPL player of the year. Boyd scored about 30 league goals last season. Naismith is Kilmarnock's best player and recently had a trial at Arsenal.

That Scotland squad is pretty damn impressive for a B team alright. It's a good challenge for our lads though.

A lot of our team are playing regular first team football as well. The likes of McPhail, Stokes, Bruce, St. Ledger, McCarthy, Foley, Potter and the eL lads are all fixtures in their respective first teams.

Will someone please tell me how the blue fúck he qualifies to wear the green of this country?

Yeah I remember I went to see the Irish under 16s play Wales in Tolka years ago and McCarthy was a leader at centre half back then. Not a lot has changed. Deserves a call up to the squad at least and is better than Andy O'Brien IMO.

As for Bruce, he qualifies through his grandmother. Can play for the North as well and was called uo to their under 21 squad before.

Did he go and join the NI U21 squad that time?

Another shambolic showing form the FAI there, this player is picking and choosing which national team he represents.

Will a 'B' international cap affect his England chances?

As far as I know he rejected the call up saying he wanted to play for us.

I think the fact that he's sh1t will have more of an affect on his England chances than a B cap.

Sean, Bruce has been playing for us almost a year now. ;)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 18,300 ✭✭✭✭Seaneh

He rejected the north out of hand, said it was the republic or nothing.

Calling him ****e is a bit harsh, he is good and getting better, not a bad player for the b squad.

Seansouth, would have the same opinion on Stephen McPhail (who should be in the senoir squad!) who rejected england u15, u16 and u18 call ups for England because he was holding out for an Ireland call up?
He was after all born in westmisnter, can't really get more english.

I suppose I should have waited for my first question in that post was answered before I asked the other one.

Fair enough, if he wants to play for us then he wants to play for us.

    What's his position?

Defensive midfielder usually but can play in the back four if needs be.

We'd probably be better off with Alex Best.

    ROFL, ah come on.

To be honest I think he is better at the back than in the middle.

Big strong lump of a lad, no harm having him in reserve!

big doesn't have to mean tall...

Peter Crouch is 6.7" but i wouldn't call him big!

Ok then he's 5'11" and 11 and a half stone. That is definitely not big for a defender.

At least he has a good disciplinary record this season. 8 yellows and 1 red in 14 games.....

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 18,300 ✭✭✭✭Seaneh

    ROFL!

didn't realise it was that bad this season!

To be honest I'd be as happy with him playing centre back as I would O'Brien or O'Shea, and I know that sounds mad, but atleast he has SOME posistional sense!

    He's only young though, 21?

Looked more than 11 and a half stone last time I saw him live :S maybe im just going mad!

    Maybe you are!!! :D

I think Paddy McCarthy (age 23) is far more deserving of the tag as replacement for those two than Bruce (age 22).

Maloney and Thomson pulled out of the Scotland squad with injury so they've only 16 players now.

Wasn't McPhail born in New York? If not I think he may have grown up there.

I'm probably going along to the game, we've a good few players in the squad who it'll be interesting to watch.

Slightly ot but the was a guy on live after 5 (todayfm) on saturday, giving out yards that there wasnt a load of el player sin the squad and sayign players from div 2 in england dont deserve a place. The presenter (cant remeber the guys name) was running through players and saying why doesnt such and such deserve the call up he got and the caller naming players from derry , cork , shels etc. Anyway the two guys were going back and forward like this for a good 5 mins.

How did neither of them cop the fact that the league is in the final stages of a very tight battle and are hardly going to release their players for a B international friendly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,483 ✭✭✭Töpher

That's precisely it. Deery was withdrawn by Derry, Pat Fenlon informed the management team weeks ago that there would be no Shelbourne players released. Wouldn't be surprised if the Cork lads are withdrawn, they can possibly steal second on Friday - allbeit with a convincing win over Derry needed.

The timing of the game is idiotic, however. Then again, with the leagues runnign different seasons, there's not too many good times to do it. The whole setup is just an addition to the existing joke.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

Both Roy and Joe are to start tonight.

As far as I know, Joe is suspended (again) on Friday, following his idiotic red card against Shels. Just hope Roy stays injury free, as we need him to fire on all cylinders on Friday night.

Ireland team is announced. I presume they'll line up something like this:

    Randolph
    Foley---McCarthy---Bruce---Emmanuel
    Gamble
    O'Donovan---McPhail---Gibson---O'Brien
    Keogh

Maybe O'Donovan will partner Keogh up front.
