I am going to retire my 9800 Pro and need a repacement card to tide me over until early to mid next year (when the cpu and mobo wars might be a bit less chaotic). The rest of the system is an XP3000+ with mild overclock and 1G RAM.

I am budgetting €150 and want a card that can handle BF2142, Planetside etc. without everything turned down!

My main contenders seem to be
    7600GS, GT or X1650 Pro

The 7600 GS seems to benchmark well against the 1650 Pro, and the 7600GT blows them both away but blows my budget slightly for a card. I don't know if the rest of my system will allow me to see the benefits of the GT.

    Opinions?

Upgrade options are limited by the fact that you have AGP so cannot acquire the 7600GT as it is PCI-e only.

However the X1650XT will be available in AGP form and is a clone of the 7600GT in terms of performance. They are expected to be available at the end of November if you can hold out.

In terms of what's available now between the 7600GS & X1650 Pro I'd go with the 7600GS.

Edit: well I'll be there is an AGP Club3D 7600GT on Komplett first I've heard of it but it's not in stock I cant imagine it will be any time soon either as there is no estimated date, a second one branded as XFX AGP 7600GT unit listed but not in stock, date is today for stock delivery but price is €205 vs the Club3D €170.

In general I'd say your system is good enough for a 7600GT/X1650XT but anything higher probably isn't worth it. Get which ever you can afford & comes first the AGP 7600GT or X1650XT is what I'd suggest.

The 7600GS isn't that great of a card. In fact a 7300GT, which can be gotten a good bit cheaper (although not on komplett where its overpriced), is close enough especially if you overclocked it. It's about the same as a 6600GT which in turns isn't a significant increase over a 9800Pro, overall I'd say the 9800 pro should actually suffice for awhile if you plan upgrading anytime soon?

If you really must I would definately wait for the agp 7600GT or the X1650xt rather then go the GS right now.

That, or pick up a cheap 6800 or x800 series card for cheap second hand?

id reccomend a x800gto from komplett. Their very cheap, Much more powerfull then the 9800pro And can be flashed to x800xt PE specs. No brainer really.

    id recommend that.

you only have 150 to spend so a new mobo with pci-e seems to be out of the question

Yeah i know just leaving it at '7300' vs '7600' seems like a no brainer but the 7300GT is alot better then you'd think, it's actually about the same as a 6600GT/X800se/6800LE etc and the 7600GS (obviously the 7600GT is miles better) isn't a massive step up, so if you wanted to save a few quid...

Also bear in mind the X1950 Pros in AGP should be landing soon...

About 4 times the speed of your 9800 Pro.

Should be circa €250 or less.

The only 2 models I have come across were Sapphire and power colour, both are using artic coolers.

Another option worth thinking about if you are willing to wait a while and pump up the budget a wee bit.

Other wise you would go with a 7600 GT
