Hi there carlow it people. I am in 4th year and i come from kilkenny. In my school there is no real careers guy. Maybe some of you here would know. I was looking through your propectus magazine the other day and i saw the course for electronic engineering. I really like the look of that course but i do lower level maths, for my junior cert i got a b in maths and b in hons science if that mean jack %^*T. I was told by a teacher that you should ask some one who has done the course well no one that i know is an electronic engineer, mny uncle went to nui maynooth and did engineering but he puts down telephone masts or something, i think its mechanical. WEll if any one here can tell me about the course and if i need to be good at maths.(it says 320 points i think in the prospectus and that i only need like a d3 or was it c3 in maths ordinary) What i mean by tell me is just can any one who is currently attending it or what not or has done it can just tell me is it a good course and lay out like a summary of some kind and if its good to do it in carlow cos its close to kilkenny. ( i dont really want to go tolimerick cos its stab city, ANd water ford It might be another choice.)

I am also asking about the games develpmonet course thats backed by microsoft my brothers currently in 6th year and he is looking to do it. is theere any1 whoes currently doing it and can u lay some feedback in this thread about it please. thanks !!!:) :D

im in the games course and i really dont like it, first year was hard but 2nd year is very hard, it isnt how i thought it woould be at all. Most of it is maths and programming which are quite difficult and time consuming. I'd only recommend it to someone who knows even a bit about what it will entail. I'ts not all fun and games ;)

no complaints about carlow town btw :)

it was 380 my year and i believe it dropped to 330 or 350 this year, you need a pass in higher level maths and a 'b' or over in pass i believe

As regards jobs in electronic engineering, there are a fair few but in more specalised fields. Many people that I work with did electronic engineering and branched off in to RF and telecoms engineering of which there are loads of jobs if your good at it.

I'm currently in 5th year of the electronic engineering course. The course specialises in Integrated circuit (I.C) design. The first two years cover the basis of Electronics, you'll have the option in third year to study the communications aspect of Electronics which I found interesting and also there is a full year project which you must deign from scratch also quite good. Much of the last two years of the course is spent in the design of I.C's using computer design software.
There is no software design really in the course but you will be taught languages like C, Pascal and microprocessor language.
The course is strongly maths based so being good at Maths would help but not essential as you may be able to become better at it as you go through the course.
There is plenty of jobs out there at the moment. The main companies which hire from this course are Intel in Kildare and Analog Devices in Limerick, also there is HP, Boston Scientific, Ericsson and others which I can't think of off hand now. You can currently expect to earn about 28,000 euro starting off which is good.
Not sure about the current entry points and they are different from when I started.
Also Carlow is a nice town, good nightlife and nice people, I'd reccommend moving down here.
    Hope this helps!
