Looking for ideas for a first car (e8000)

Hey gang!

I'm in the market for my first car. I'm willing to spend upwards of e8000. I was considering an A3 or Golf but I decided against both considering I could probably get a car two or three years newer for the same money.

I'm looking for opinions on cars around the e7000 - 8000 mark. I'm a 21 year old guy, on a first provisional. Insurance isn't an issue. The likes of fiesta, micra, polo, punto etc really dont appeal to me. Preferably, a 1.4 or 1.6.

Don't take this the wrong way, but nobody should ever spend much on a first car. With the best will in the world, it's going to get wrecked. Spend €3000 on a first car, drive it for a year and pass your test. Then go out and buy something nicer.

I guess, but when I look at cars around the 4000 mark, I start thinking for an extra couple of grand I'd get a much nicer car and not have to upgrade next year.

If you want value, buy a Euro car. If you want reliability, buy a Jap car.

Avoid Golf 1.4 like the plague. Buy the Audi - nice car, but make sure you're in the AA, and that you get a warranty.

I'm still at a loss as to why a 1.6 for first-time 21 yr old male is 'no problem', though...............

How about a 1.5 Civic?

If you were looking at the A3 or Golf then I would suggest looking at the Seat Leon. Them and the Skoda Octavia are all based on the same platform as the Golf/A3. The Leon is the prettiest of the bunch imo and look very good indeed with a nice set of ally wheels.

How about a 1.5 Civic?

Company insurance.

I've been driving various 3.0 4x4s for the past few months, so I'd like a 1.4 anyway.
