    Run 'cmd'
    Type 'ping www.jolt.co.uk'

    Post the results

    Great, here are the results of 2 tests with 50 pings each time:

    1) Ping statistics for 82.133.85.65:
    Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 49, Lost = 1 (2% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 56ms, Maximum = 220ms, Average = 81ms

    2) Ping statistics for 82.133.85.65:
    Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 55ms, Maximum = 180ms, Average = 83ms

    Are these stats any good??

    They're not great. 50ms would be good. Try pinging www.boards.ie to see if it's just a problem with routing to the UK. I presume you're not download/uploading anything during your tests.

    The only way to be sure is that getting your hands on one of those 2 month trials you get with games, and seeing in the flesh if the games are laggy or not.

    Great, here are the boards results:

    Ping statistics for 82.195.136.250:
    Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 52ms, Maximum = 109ms, Average = 74ms

    Would I benefit from moving up to a 2Meg service or would the round trip times stay the same??

    2Meg won't make any difference. Your ISP *may* be able to improve it. Your problem is bad latency. Do a seach in boards using that keyword, and you'll see the problems that other people encounter when trying to do gaming online/VOIP.

    Great, thanks for that Leper.
    I will have a look at that tonight and see what I can do with the isp.
    If the latency was to improve woule increasing to 2mb help after that no??

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,821 ✭✭✭irishproduce

    Actually, is there any way I can improve the latency.
    if not, who would be the best for low latency??
    I would really like to be able to go online.

    If I were to go online for say Pro Evo with these stats, would it be a waste of time, what could I expect??

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,821 ✭✭✭irishproduce

    Anyone?? Can anyone advise what would happen if I were to play Pro Evo with these stats??

    Thats

    any game which isnt requiring you to shoot an object before it shoots you wont get affected as much, rpg games, and those where you are moving around, exploring, or attackijng using slower actions than a bullet w9ould be perfectly playable if you are under 200ms.

    Only shooting games should require you to have a steady <60ms ping

    That sound like good news. I dont really like shooting games and Pro is the only game I have anyway.
    What about shooting from 20 yards out, does that not count as shooting ;):D .

    I will try it so as my pings are a good bit lower than 200. Would there be much lag at say 100 ms no?

    as i said unless a split second means life or death, the smoothness of play should be ok, its just there will be a slight error / lag from when you do an action to when the server sees it.

    Just by way of comparison.
    I'm on digiweb's 3 meg package from the Arklow exchange and I get the following when pinging jolt

    Pinging www.jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=27ms TTL=56
    Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=27ms TTL=56
    Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=56
    Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=56

    Ping statistics for 82.133.85.65:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 26ms, Maximum = 27ms, Average = 26ms

    Yeah would also like to know, those pings are shocking! :eek:

    Those pings are just about ok so long as you're not a hardcore FPS shooter type person but if the packetloss ever gets above 5%, you're in a bad way.

    My provider is you frindly local broadband guys: irishbroadband.

    They haven't been too bad for me over the last month or so, I used to have alot of problems with them but not anymore.
    Is there a way I can speed up my pings??

    I am in Limerick

    Would it help if I threatened to leave them or is it a case of there is nothing they can do about latency because I am going to contact them tomorrow
