No real difference in enemies, 3yr old AI means it hasn't quite grabbed me. Too be honest, I kind of expected it to be like this, given the limited game mechanics, but the uncomfortable camera views and lack of real-world affecting physics mean its a pretty show, but only slightly above average gameplay..
Ah well...........onto the next over-hyped release..

from the limited play i've had (about 20mins, i'm up early for work so couldn't do an all-night nerd session) i found the AI to be quite good. leaping over the places i'm hiding out to kick the sh1te out of me, and what not.

at first i did find the camera odd. almost nauseating when you first swivel the camera around to take a look (evoking an interesting blur effect)... probably the closest i'll ever feel akin to those who played doom when that first arrived. but you get used to it pretty quick. it's like 3rd person mode where you can see a lot more.

as for physics etc., you are right there. the UE3 engine has a lot more in it then this, but as i've already said somewhere on boards, i consider gears to be a showcase for the 360, and a tech demo for unreal tourney :)

Thats not saying much. The multiplayer is pretty rubbish. Max 8 players per game, DM/TDM and Kill the other teams leader game mode. Wow.

€24.99 in Game, traded in Enchanted Arms aswell + €5 on my Game card!

CiaranC, have you actually played it?

Have you actually played it yet? If so, how long? Because if you have not, you are officially a ****ing retarded fanboy of some nature who belongs on some retard rodeo forum and should resist posting random negative comments on stuff that you know nothing about.

Ironically I am posting about a game I have not plated :/

I picked up the Special Edition in Harvey Normans in Dundalk for €60. Shame my 360 is in Dublin :/

    Okaaay there chief.

I have been playing a review copy for about 10 days. The multiplayer, unless I am missing something, is extremely limited.

Do try to be less of a cock.

Well I stand corrected :) Unfortunately the posters posts on anything xbox related in recent weeks have tainted by opinion on him.

I forgot people take criticism of a commercial product they bought in a shop so personally, like they have some vested interest in it. How the marketeers pulled off that trick is beyond me.

Maybe they'll add more gametypes and expand the amount of players in an add-on.

GoW is a great game. The production values are second to none. It looks absolutely superb, the models and lighting affects in particular. It sounds great. Its based on a good premise, using cover; which takes away the focus from twitch shooting and puts it back on tactics, which is great for consoles with the limited accuracy of the controller.

The bad: Same rubbish storyline as every other shooter. A bit samey. Maybe a bit short. Multiplayer is lacking.

Of course IGN and Gamespot are going to give it 9/10, its the nearest thing to a killer app on 360, a platform with very little in the way of top quality gaming so far. Its not in their interest to see it fail. Its probably closer to an 8/10 in reality.

Sorry but you sorta sealed your faith on this thread:

It is somewhat worrying that you are a journalist of some sorts and that people will be basing some of their games purchases on your opinion. Remember to remain impartial yeah ;) I am not the first to call you a fanboy now am I?

Wow, a balance opinon. I only bought the game today actually. The fact of the matter is that it has been described as the best game so far this year across a large number of website. We are arguing bull**** to be honest - it's a quality game that is not perfect. You should consider making posts like this from now on to be honest, it will ensure your posts get a more positive response.

I dont think you really understand the concept of fanboyism.

Inability to countenance any criticism whatever of your favourite games console might be considered a prime example.

What makes you assume it is my favourite console - considering I have or have had a PS1, PS2 (3 of them since it was released), Xbox, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Megadrive, 32X, Saturn, Dreamcast, 360 and plan to by both a Wii and PS3. I have a massive appreciation for the games industry in general and like to think I have a basic understanding of economics also. The post I linked too pretty sums up your knowledge on both topics and for this reason alone, I dismiss both your opinion with regard to this game and any claim that you what you are talking about in general.

To be honest, your balanced post regarding the game nearly redeemed yourself but then I went and read the post I linked too again.. Pretty much lost all respect once again  Ah well

Anyway, Viva Piniata looks suprisingly good too. The MTV trailer for Mass Effect looks ****ing amazing also.

    http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=2211

Some good titles coming out thank god.

You obviously missed this post at the top of page6. There are no where near enough quality titles out for the 360 at the moment. Only for I tend to be an early adoptor when it comes to consoles, I doubt I would have bought a 360 on launch day. To be honest, I probably would have waited till Halo 3 was launched.

The point that there arent enough quality titles on 360 a year after release is perfectly valid, you've just made the same point yourself.

I dont know how I'll sleep tonight knowing your semi-literate self has dismissed my opinion. Oh the ignominy!

btw gears of war is rubbish online rarr

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

I think the online play is great even with it's limitations. Doesn't take anything away. Sure you can go "halo had this and that" and even though connections are flaky,i've enjoyed every game and i don't need 20 players and capture the monkey or whatever everyone wants in every game nowadays, not having these things doesn't m,atter. Anyway Ciaran 99% of all your posts on any subject are cyncial rubbish  The game is good, it deserves what praise it gets although in the end it's just a game. Please stop sounding like a cock in every post, it's very annoying. I've had the game 10 days oh loal :\/

read: I have really low standards and so should everyone else.

Come on, 4 vs 4 deathmatch is pretty dismal in this day and age.

Well I have a higher post count than you. Bad at English or a dumb ****? Bad at English or a complete fool? Bad at English or destined to fail as a games journalist? I think I will go with bad at English Ted.

Look mate, if all you can do at this stage is comment in my written English, I think it might be best to just hush. Out of curiosity, what site/mag do you write for.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,300 ✭✭✭CiaranC

A complete fool for pointing out that there are way more PS2 titles this season than Xbox 360 ones and that multiplayer is lacking in GoW. I should be locked up for giving an opinion.

    Stop with the silly fanboyism.

Gamesworld on Henry St were the first store to get it in on Tuesday, they were doing the Midnight launch thing on Thursday night/Fri morning, and they were selling it for 449.99euro with an XBox 360, a 3 Month subscription to Games Informer, a Ethernet Cable and an A/V Adaptor. Plus the XBox 360 was complete, wireless controllers etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Well I'm enjoying this a lot anyway.

I'm not usually a big fan of this type of game but this works very well.

Storyline isn't great though and why do all the characters have to be knuckleheads? It's all a bit dull in that respect.

I've been playing co-op mode with my nephew and it's great fun.... I just wish it was easier to throw a grenade other than have to put away your gun and take out a grenade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭unklerosco

because skinny bookish white kids with glasses fightin the locust horde looked ridiculous.
Multiplayer is great in this game, as long as youre plying with friends. playing randomers noone communicates and just rambos around the place. The smaller 4 v 4 games ust add to the tension and allows for better communication in your team and encourages real teamplay.

Oh yes and I love the Hammer of Dawn weapon. It's taken straight out of Akira, if you've read the comic book the Colonel uses a laser targeting device just like that to give the co-ordinates to the SOL satellite to fire on Tetsuo.

I had planned to wait a while before I got this, but changed my mind last week and put an order in at cdwow because it was only 55 quid. They still haven't shipped it yet and there is no indication on the site that it is out of stock. Plus there is no option to cancel. I should have stuck with play.com who usually ship on the release date.

You're not saving much money though as it's only about €2 or €3 more in some shops.

Yeah ok, jesus you have a stupid argument. Some of the best games I've ever played have been 1v1 duels. You are assessing the games on numbers and comparisons that aren't valid, that's worse than any fanboyism you'll see. Do you have a clip board for rating games?

Yeah I know. When I ordered it, I thought it would be about 70 in the shops here. I only found out a few days later that HMV were selling new titles for 59.

the 360 premium comes with the ethernet and adaptor anyway. there's a gears of war/360 bundle out now anyway for about €450. the only difference there is the sub to games informer, which would just be a burden since that magazine stinks :D
