Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

the best thing to do in Venice, is walk about soaking up the atmosphere of the place. It really is an amazing city.

If you eat or drink around St Mark's square, you will pay through the nose, but the further away you get especially up towards the student quarter, the cheaper it gets.

I would strongly recommend getting a "rough guide" or "lonely planet" book as this will give you the best advice.

I was there for New Year's a few years ago. Personally I don't think I would recommend it for that specifically, or Italy in general for that matter (have also been to Bologna between Christmas and New Year) - the entire place has a tendency to shut up.

In Venice restaurants do all _at least_ double their prices for the night. Everything seems to start shutting around 4pm on New Year's Eve which completely spooked us into booking in a very elaborate but also very expensive restaurant (I remember the cost was higher than the likes of L'Ecrivan), if I was doing it again I think I would be arranging a picnic in St. Mark's with the fireworks. It was also _very_ wet with flooding.

If you do go you will have the advantage of less tourists than normal. Apart from the main island and St. Mark's what I really would suggest is getting off to some of the other islands, which have a completely different atmosphere and seem completely deserted of tourists! We went to Murano, famous for it's glass, and on to Torcello which was _completely_ empty (like a handful of other people empty.)

Other good things to expect will be Christmas markets and outdoor ice skating (don't remember one in Venice but all Italian cities have them so I am sure there is both somewhere!)

I did a day trip out to Verona while I was in Venice. Really easy, only an hour or so (maybe two) on the train.

IIRC Verona's about three hours bus and 20min ferry from Venice. I really didnt like Venice that much, its way too touristy, and well overpriced. I like verona a lot though, its a cool town to go to, ive been there twice i think
