Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi All,
Just wondering roughly how many sockets we should put in new house..it is an 1800 square feet bungalow. Also any tips on lighting? Electrician asked us to specify where we want recessed lighting? Any wisdom out there on recessed lighting? Are they better? How much dearer are they? Any tips on where to put sockets, different types of lights etc all gratefully accepted.

Old electricians' motto: It is better to be looking at it than for it.
Definitely applies to sockets, depending on your budget.
Probably should have one in each corner of every room, plus a couple more for home entertainment in the lounge, also maybe one for a plasma screen up on the wall.
At least four above the kitchen worktop and whatever you need below it.

As far as recessed lighting goes it is really a matter of personal preferences.
Downlighters give a nice contrasty light effect for little money.
You might consider the hallway, landing, bathrooms, kitchen and maybe in each corner of the lounge and dining rooms along with centre lights.
Put dimmer switches on everything if you can.
Try and avoid low voltage lights, use GU10 type instead.
Maybe consider some 5amp sockets for table lamps switched at the door in some rooms.

Try and include everything at the start, it always costs more to add points later.

I just added in Halogen downlighters to my kitchen/diner
There were regular bulb spotlights in the room but we didnt like them.
There were 6 original lights but we found that we had to increase the number of halogens (50w) up to 10.
They do give a nice light but we found that, unlike the original bulbs that protrude a bit these dont and so the ceiling and the tops of surrounding walls can be a bit dark.

we put in nice brushed chrome sockets/phone/cat5/tc points in a new extension and got them off ebay - saved a few euro.

There are new eco-friendly d/l available now -check them out.
def sockets in every corner and power for undercounter lights also.

if you are pc/gadget minded like me :D consider putting a cable conduit from your tv area to a cupboard , for a media pc.
and put cat5 beside your tv also - to future proof it for broadband.

spend the few extra punt on the kitchen fittings - it will make a difference.
standard white ones for bedrooms etc all with switches.
