I have just finished my first major commercial website, and my client is very insistent on getting high listing on all the major search engines even if it means paying extra, there are lots of sites that offer search engine submitting but not sure which ones are reputable and good, any suggestions. Up until now I have generally just waited and eventually appeared on Google.

    Thanks
    D

    Hi D****,

Have a look at www.redcardinal.ie. He might be able to help you out! :D

p.s. congrats on first commercial website... you got a link?

Well you'll always have to wait to get listed unfortunately. However, there are a lot of Search Engine Optimisation techniques that you can use to improve and build your ranking. I would recommend finding someone who knows about SEO and who can also implement the techniques that will enhance your ranking - rather than some snake-oil salesman (be careful, there are lots of them about!)

    I would recommend Richard Hearne.

    oooh, sorry. that's a first!

if you want to be that secretative, maybe you should remove your hotmail email address from your boards profile cause that contains your full name!!!!!

I hope ppl don't get confused. My initials are db and I live in navan too! :D

I believe Richard has a good name on the SEO side of things. Haven't worked with him yet but hoping to work with him down the line! I've been reading his blog lately and had a couple of correspondences from him and he seems to really know his stuff.

If you don't want anyone saying it then you shouldn't 'generally' not use it: you should never use it and remove it from your profile for goodness sake.

seo isn't that hard to do and if you're a capable enough web developer then doing your own optimization isn't going to kill you.

Google Sitemaps, Yahoo Site Explorer, Mod Rewrite for clean urls if you're using dynamic addressing on Apache, Link Backs, Valid Code, no flash menus, robots.txt, keyword page titles, external css + js, irish ip or domain name if focused on the irish market, a keyword in the domain (if possible) and link, link and link. This will help you get you up the charts but don't expect it to happen over night.

Point taken, no big deal. Just never had someone use it before. Sorry David & Gordon :)

Why wouldn't you post the link?
You're looking for help regarding getting a site listed on SEs' but you're not giving any information. Bit of a hard task to give free advise if you can't provide us with information.

Handbags at dawn by the sounds.

Back on topic, if you have just created your first commercial project you really should get to know the in's and out's of SEO. There are professionals out there that are a different level obviously but there are basics you should know.

Not really the topic here either tbh, Never claimed to be a professional, I asked a question because I wanted to know an answer and I got it, yes it is a commerical website, but the client had seen quality of college work and was happy to give the job to me end of story.

 yet again defends myself needlessly

I was actually referring to SEO professionals you could employ to help you and your situation which I thought was the topic of this thread.

 yet again misses the point of the thread

The problem with the written word... it can have a few meanings. I don't think jumpa was saying you were unprofessional or was challenging your work. He was actually giving you some sound advice that will help you in servicing this client and future clients down the road. This is stuff you NEED to know about. You don't need to specialise in it, but there are basic things you should know and employ.

You said in your first post that you "generally just waited and eventually appeared in Google". You also said that your "client is very insistent on getting high listing on all the major search engines". To perform the latter, it's not good enough to just let google just find your site or to just use those submission websites (actually I think they're bad for you). If google, yahoo, msn, etc eventually get to your site, you need your site to be ready for them using SEO techniques to get better rankings.

You should be looking at Rollo Tamasi's post a bit more:
Google Sitemaps, Yahoo Site Explorer, Mod Rewrite for clean urls if you're using dynamic addressing on Apache, Link Backs, Valid Code, no flash menus, robots.txt, keyword page titles, external css + js, irish ip or domain name if focused on the irish market, a keyword in the domain (if possible) and link, link and link. This will help you get you up the charts but don't expect it to happen over night.

This is the stuff you should really be concentrating your work on to get good rankings for your client. Richard over at Red Cardinal has two good posts on this topic:

    - http://www.redcardinal.ie/search-engine-optimisation/19-10-2006/10-steps-to-getting-into-google-and-staying-there/

If you use these techniques and you still aren't up the list, it's time to get a professional in. Actually, let me rephrase that... it's time to bring in someone that specialises in SEO, like Richard. I don't specialise in SEO but I know enough about it to help my clients using standard SEO techniques and I'm doing it as part of an overall service and keeping within their budgets. If a client wants to allocate more resources (money) to SEO and SEM... then it's time to put someone in that specialises in it... and that's what I do... I'll bring someone external in to work with the client and me on SEO/SEM.

    I hope that helps!

    Rgds, Dave
