Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Forewarning: I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to technology so nothing you say to me can be too basic...no matter what you think.

I got a laptop lately (cheapo Dell Inspiron something or other) and I'm just wondering what's the best way of keepin gthe battery in good health. Should I have it plugged into the mains as much as possible or is that bad for it? Should I just plug it into the mains when I'm using it (if possible) or should I be leaving the battery run down before recharging it?

Much the same a phones battery, you should only keep them plugged in when you are charging them, and the battery should be let run down as much as possible (preferably until Windows warns you, or the computer goes into stand-by).

Used to leave mine plugged in all the time as well, and after a year and a half I had to replace the battery simply because it wasn't charging any more.

The bottom line is use the battery as little as possible. If you are near a plug, take out the battery and use mains. Never charge at battery unless it is completely empty. Leave the battery out when on mains.

For longest shelf life of Lithium Ion batteries

Let the battery drain until it's down to 40%
then put it in a plastic bag and put it in the fridge ( not the freezer )

Overcharging is the biggest killer, but depends on brand / model. Properly done a laptop should stop charging once it reaches 100% and not start recharging until say it's dropped to 95% or so.

Don't let the battery go flat each time, that to prevent charge memory in NiCads for older batteries and only really applies if the discharge is exactly the same each time as it would be in satellites or something.
Use the battery as you need it. Just let the battery discharge fully once a month.
