Chagaev Secures Wba Title Shot

Uzbekistan's Ruslan Chagaev earned himself a shot at the WBA heavyweight title after clinching a split decision victory over John Ruiz on Saturday night.
Chagaev landed the cleaner shots throughout the contest and appeared in control for most of the 12-round contest.
However, although he was adjudged a 116-112 and a 117-111 winner on two of the cards, one judge went in favour of Ruiz, 115-114.
The win improved Chagaev's record to 22-0-1 and means he will now get a crack at WBA title-holder, Russian Nikolay Valuev who was ringside to watch the bout.
”Chagaev won two or three rounds more than Ruiz - the win was earned,” commented the 'Beast from the East'.
Chagaev was the busier of the two fighters in the early rounds, but did most of his best work through the middle of the contest.
He rocked Ruiz in the fifth and eighth rounds, but never looked like stopping the Puerto Rican.
Indeed, Ruiz - who lost the title to Valuev in December - staged a late comeback as he attempted to secure a rematch and had his opponent in trouble in both the tenth and 11th, but it proved too little too late as Chagaev held on.

Hopefully this is the end of Ruiz , 'huggy bear' has been detrimental to heavyweight boxing ever since Don King organised his rise to WBA champ .
