Got a problem with a gearbox on a primera. Brought it to a dealers and they discovered that theres a hole in the gearbox which is leaking oil and I cant change into reverse. Now they say E4500 for a new one, or E1200 reconditioned which is what I opted for but its going to take a week from some crowd in naas.

Its an 02 primera, if anyone knows somewhere around the dublin area that might be cheaper than a dealers and worth checking give us a shout.

    Thanks.

i would advise you stay away from a main dealer. perhaps a gearbox specialist will give you a better price????

I'd try for one in a scrapyard if I were you.

Its a hole in the gearbox and theres oil leaking from it making it difficult to change gear, especially in reverse gear. It will be a costly repair too, and I want to shop around first to see if I can get a cheaper gearbox before I give those guys the go ahead to carry out any work on it.

I had an old Primera, 95 1.6L. About 2 years after I had it when I put it into reverse it would start clicking, brought it to garage and they said the cog was after breaking off one of the teeth and not worth repairiing and they would trade it in.

Told them where to go so went to mate and he got me and new gear box and installed for 550 total. :D he got a gear box out of a crashed 01 Primera and put it in. Alot of Primera in scrap because so many where bought so second hand parts are cheap on them. It kept going for another 2 years and I sold it on then, got 500 quid for it in local market

Isn't there a place called Mr. Gearbox? You need to ring somewhere like this.

If it was my car now I would go to a dissmantlers but, the owner wants a dealer to fit it so that its all above board, but hes going to pay a price for it. :p

€1,200 is a fair price, and Naas Gearbox Centre are v.good.

Not worth it to get dealer to do it, trade it in and get a new car. Seriously thats what they told me and that was a good few years ago. How old is the car?

Edit, sorry just seen its a 02, still wouldnt pay a garage for it. Get one of the lads to do it, once they are professtional will get just as good a job only alot cheaper! most work with garages and do these job for cash in hand

Easy to fit a used gearbox. Just make sure it is the exact match with the exact same gear ratios. Shoudl be available for a few hundred and about 6 hours to exchange.

Why did it get holed in teh first place, something internal, like loose pinion cross-shafts or hit an object?.

The car has had alot go wrong with it, airbag lights come on, electric windows fail and now this mofo of a job to sort. Im going up to a place to have a look at a reconditioned gearbox today and hopefully that works out.
