Hi Lads,A friend has a 528i auto 1998 car and the gearbox is shagged. There is no forward gears working and a light came on saying gearbox trouble.

First thing to do is check it for fluid. If there's no fluid in the torque convertor you won't go anywhere. However, if you have reverse, but no forward gears you could be looking at €€€€€s worth of clutch packs and gear shafts and be better off looking for a donor from a scrap yard. Make sure any scrapped cars have plenty of visible body/chassis damage though. Many automatic cars beyond a certain age end up being scrapped purely because of the gearbox. Find one that was scrapped because of a huge cosmetic repair bill rather than mechanical trouble.

A & M Auto Diagnostic Centre(180 James's st Dublin 8) do reconditioned ones. 1000 Euros I was quoted for one of these for a 3 series (parts and labour).

Auto Tranz (Greenhills Ind Est Walkinstown Dn 12 Dublin) will do fluid changes for 80 euros.

Maybe Dennis Henderson Motor Services( Unit J1A Marina Commercial Pk Centre Park rd Cork Cork) is better for your friend.
