Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

XPSM1710 Qs

    right,

i read it is better to leave a battery run out before charging again, ie: not leave plugged into the mains all the time.

however, any XPS owners here notice its pretty much impossible to watch dvds with a battery, and playing games (well recent ones such a FEAR) is a no no......
so mine is pretty much all the time powered up........

    opinions?

also, does 2 gigs or ram make much of a difference from 1gig.....?

I'd like to hear where you heard that. I use mine in college and at home a lot.
So the battery is getting charged and used a lot. Surely keeping it on the
mains doesnt use the battery just saving its charge somewhat.

I can watch DVDs without a problem and playing games in general will drain the
battery of any laptop especially a powerhouse M1710.

Game performance really decreases if you dont have it plugged in anyway.
I currently get about 2 hours of development work. Thats about 10 applications
all running at once. Database stuff and general development tools. Just browsing
the web I get about 2hrs 20min with the sceen on full brightness.

I doubt 2gigs will help you much with general office work. For games it might.
Especially the new games coming out. Running 2gigs with no paging file
might cut out some disk read/writes and help the battery but I doubt its that
    much noticable.

DVDs on the battery are fine, but if you're playing graphics heavy games (eg oblivion) you'll only get a little over an hour of battery life. The battery lasts between 3 and 3.5 hours with regular use though.

No point in starting another thread. Going to be ordering an Inspiron 9400 and 2 6400's in the next day or so. While I am at I am thinking of M1710 for myself. I'm not paying:) . Would have about 2k net to use. Could you post up your specs and give your opinions on it. Also everyone else's opinion is also appreciated. Looking at the minute for alternatives also so if anyone has any suggestions?

    Cheers.

I just ordered an XPS 1710. There was a link on boards a while back that had benches for graphics cards on Toms hardware. It covered all cards including mobile and you could select from a drop down list which one you wanted to see. Anyone have a link?

    Thanks.

Yes running the battery down low before recharging improves its life...rather than keeping it topped up as most nerds do....anyway sounds like you guys need an arcade visit...I use computers.. ;) good luck.

Thats a total myth. Used to be true for old ni-cd batteries ten years ago. Running your battery right down is not necessary, and doing so deliberately is just using up battery charge cycles which will shorten the batteries life.

1,220 is a damn good price for that spec. Did you get it from the outlet, I assume so?

3k. Im not too well up on the technical side of things when it comes to computers, but the specs on that seem very good from what I've researched.

    Maybe Im wrong?

    3k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,382 ✭✭✭petes

Mine is about €2800. Only difference in the two specs mainly are the processors. I have the T7400 in mine whereas four of a kind has the T7600. My hard drive is 20Gig bigger although it is 5,400. Hope I don't have any delays.
