It turns out I still need to purchase the computers with MS Home edition installed as the XP Pro license is an upgrade.

I'd push to get as good a spec as possible now (within budget), as from the sounds of it (throwing out p233'a now..) the school won't get another chance for a long time.

The extra cost now, will save alot of time and money in the future. On DVD-RW/CD, the difference in cost is negligible these days, and while not needed, does not make sense not to get, i'm sure they don't need 2-3 PCI slots in each machine either, but there is no cost difference.

Thin client's never get used, we had a thin client lab in college that was running high spec stuff that nobody would ever want to use, and sat empty (and probably ate away alot of budget) 99% of the time.

    Thanks for that.

I was on to the education section of Dell. I chose a really low spec dimension. The guy there told me that they cant sell more than 5 of these as they are home systems. He said the standard machine (optiplex) they offer to schools is 800 euro. I
    €800
The Dimension C521 (D11C11) on the small business section starts at €249
VAT & Shipping NOT included if you choose the 1 year collect and return option.

Ok it's stripped down, but you can use existing monitors or get them later or elsewhere , you could also buy the memory separatly. You could use the savings on warranty to buy a spare machine or two.

Anyone know of any decent flat screens ?
eg: you could get one of the ALDI/LIDL 32" TV's to use as display screen

    Hi Guys
I have done some work on schools.

1.there is no need for proxy server - all content filtering is done through ncte servers.

    2. buying 20 printers sounds ridiculous - get 2-3 network printers and place them in areas easily accessed. The ink cartridge replacement will cost ya a bomb for 20.

    3. You can buy some office xp suites at unbelievable discounts for the schools through some disadvantaged scheme. Its really good value.. Check it out with the schools ICT Advisor- they will sort it for ya....

    4. File server is good idea - back ups are essential.....

    ;)
