Thinking of setting up a linux network in my home...

    Hi

    I'm interested in technology and not bad with computers etc.

    I am thinking of setting up a Fedora network in my home.

    This would be -

    Internet <- Linux (Firewall / Print server / File server / Web server) <- Wireless Router <- Laptops in my home

    So, would I connect my main internet cable into Linux box; the wireless router is connected to my linux box too; laptops then connect via the wireless router and out through the firewall... sound correct??

    Do Irish Broadband allow users to run a server from their home? It'd be very lightweight, just for testing...

    Any pointers, advice appreciated!!

    OK well let me rephrase. Would they know I'm running a web server? Again, very lightweight, only for testing purposes...

    Will the web server be internet-accessible? If so, then they would be able to see HTTP sessions coming in and would put two and two together (assuming they'd be monitoring in the first place?). I'm sure a lot of people chance their arm anyway. If it's only to be accessed from the local network, it wouldn't be a problem.

    As a side security note, if possible, you should try to keep servers seperate from firewalls - i.e. not run a web/file/print server on the same machine as your firewall. Of course in a home scenario, this might not be avoidable (although you could use any auld 486 for a firewall).
