Cat5e cable for intercom ?

Our electrician wired a run of cable from our porch door to the gates
with cat5e cable buried underground in a wavin duct.
He originally mentioned poly-poly cable but I was unable to get it in
the electrical wholesalers. The wholesalers said that poly-poly was just
more weather resistant and the typical intercom systems just use 2 or
so pairs within the cable. I know I could have purchased outdoor grade
cat5e but I reckon by running it through the wavin duct it should be ok.

Any comments on this approach. The electrician seems to recall someone
mentioning to him something about 2 runs of cat5e cable. That doesn't
    make sense to me.

Anyone familiar with the wiring requirements for outdoor intercom system?

It is probably ok. I have seen different intercom systems, all with different wiring requirements. But 8 cores should be enough to do. It would have been better to use the outdoor-grade cable, but what you have will probably do.

cat5e is fine. its mechanically protected with the conduit, and chances are that anything sharp enough to break through the wavin would also cut the outdoor cable. but if he can, it'd probly be better if he ran two cat5's and maybe a coax(incase you want a screen).

What is the deal with 2 cat5e runs ?

redundancy in case one breaks ?

well, yeah, but also you mentioned he originally wanted poly-poly which has 11 pairs(i think, cant remember off hand) and thats 22 cables. and depending on the system your getting he could need more cores, or depending on the length of the run he might need to double up on the cable to increase the signal strenght.

    Thanks PunK05

I think I see it now. I guess it's like speaker wire. The more strands
of copper the better the signal when going out a larger distance.
I'd say the distance from porch to gates in our cases is a good
    50-60metres.

Maybe two cores would have been a better idea. I'll see if there is
still time for him to fish through another core.
