Last week we had eircom saying they probably would not take the now "spare" 3g license...

    This week we have :

Eircom will accept 3G mobile licence - CEO
    Published: Thursday 23 November 2006 | 05:48 PM CET

Irish phone company Eircom will accept the 3G mobile licence previously offered to Smart Telecom, CEO Robert Haulbrook told the Irish Independent. This is the fourth and final 3G mobile licence. Telecommunications regulator ComReg had revoked its offer of the licence to Smart in a dispute over payment of a EUR 100 million bond, a move backed by the High Court. Haulbrook said that Meteor aimed to share the 3G network with rival operators to cut roll-out costs by up to 25 percent. Eircom acquired mobile operator Meteor in 2005.

    That's good of 'em.....

Other people bid, eircom seem to begrudgingly "accept" it

    It's a scandal if not re-auctioned.

eircom are talking the market down. They're actually looking for a new action, so that they don't have to pay as much as they bid the last time. They're suggesting that it's not economically feasible to do it build the network on their own - that's why their suggesting sharing it with others.

And they've demonstrated the world of hurt that they can visit on anyone who tries to bid against them, so even if any of the current players in the reseller market are thinking about it, they're thinking about how they'll get screwed not how they'll make a success of it. And if eircom scares everyone else away, then maybe they'll do Comreg a favour and take the license off their hands, as long as they modify the terms and conditions to suit eircom.
