Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. 1-1 now in the Everton game, an Arteta free-kick deflected by Hreidarsson and then a lovely strike by Andy Reid. He's having a very good game.

Excellent. What position is he in? Judging by the lineup he's back playing behind the striker?

Yeah Charlton are playing with 5 in midfield, Faye and Holland in the centre and Reid pushed further on, behind Bent. He set up Rommedahl beautifully after the goal, and he has had another shot from outside the box parried by Howard. Ten minutes left and I'd be surprised if he wasn't man of the match.

Was just about to post this and he won a nice tackle in his own half. Has to be MOTM.

Villa juts equalised with a dive peno.

Liverpool - City is hard work! Gerrard is playing way too deep for my liking and with City playing 4-5-1 Pool are not getting much joy through the middle while the wide play lacks quality.

Sorry Mike but Liverpool are playing sh1t again today. Haven't been impressed with Gerrard lately at all, though some of the dross around him aren't helping. Think ye're missing Xabi Alonso badly, personally I wouldn't rate Zenden and Luis Garcia is talented but must be very frustrating to watch for Pool fans.

Just flicked on Bolton v Arsenal what a game! Anelka hit a screamer to make it 2-0 and seconds later Gilberto pulled it back to 2-1.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,563 ✭✭✭kinaldo

    Aaarrrrhhhhh I hate Botlon!

Fair play to them though this has been a terrific game played at an incredibly high pace.

Typical Anelka to finally score, twice no less, against one of his former clubs - brilliant finishing.

I think I've overrated Arsenal again this season. They're still a class side, just a bit too fragile.

Once again City lose away from home. It's Pearce's neagativity that's killing us. Every away game is 4-5-1 and sit deep. We're bound to concede eventually and then are left chasing the game. So frustrating as a fan and I can't understand why he changed the line up from last week's win.

Liverpool: Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Agger, Luis Garcia (Pennant 59), Gerrard, Zenden, Riise, Crouch (Fowler 65), Kuyt (Bellamy 89).
    Subs Not Used: Dudek, Paletta.

RTE panel salivating over Woodgate's performance again for Boro today.

I knew this would happen when he turned down Newcastle, he's only missed one game and that was a dead leg!

Already this season he's kept Anelka, Henry, Bellamy and Martins amongst others tucked away in his back pocket.

Middlesbrough are sooooooo lucky he supports them.

Dunno about that with the way Pool and Arse playing away can see that little group staying as is till end of season when Pool and Arse have to win X games to make CL.

Reading are 6th and good for it , tbh shaping up to a decent year for the PL everyone beatable.

I have to be optimistic about the Villa, O' Neill has a considerable transfer kitty if he can get the players he wants. That said, right now I'd take anything :o

Feel yer pain, I was watching it with 2 mates both City die hards, I've almost developed an affinity for the club at this stage.

Barton is a super wee player, but there seems to be real lack of quality there, I'm not so sure Pearce is fully to blame. Personally I never rated Vassell, even when he was at Villa, runs around like a headless chicken with no end product. Samoras good player but on the bench??

Pains me to say it, but I don't see City climbing out of mid table mediocrity anytime soon, unless they get some serious investment. You'd be amazed how many Premiership club chairmen are happy to let their club hover around 16th place and as long as they don't get relegated they're content. Such was the case for 15 years at Villa Park under that old coot Doug Ellis. Like I said, I feel yer pain! ;)

Just watching motd there, and again i have to say how terrible it is to see how one footed certain players are. Adebyour(sp?) has such good skill and turn a bolton player brilliantly on the edge of the area and ended up a couple of yards outside the post with the ball nice for a left foot shot, but instead he brings his right across his left and pokes a dribbly backpass to the keeper.

It pains me to see players doing that when even a wild thrash with your left will do a better job. There are so many players doing that nowadays, it's just so bad to see. Anyway , rant over. 3 much needed points for Liverpool today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,544 ✭✭✭redspider

Whilst I'm glad that Liverpool won today, and for Gerrard to score as well, I am not happy at all. And the reason was how the win was achieved. A poor performance from Liverpool really as we found it very difficult to create good chances. This was mainly down to the formation.
I read Liverpool were playing with wing backs today? What was the line-up?

I'm glad you asked. I have a bone to pick with Rafa.

    He played something like this:

    Reina

    Carra - Hyypia - Agger ----
    Finnan
    Riise
    Zenden
    -- Kuyt --- Gerrard
    Garcia --
    Crouch

It was hard to describe and baffled the pundits to be honest. MOTD completely missed it and Setanta knew it wasnt what was on the pre-match sheets (ie: Agger was not at left back) but still couldnt describe it properly.

To me, this was a new formation and one that Benitez has not played to date, or if so not in a long time. I thought we had gone through all that formation tinkering last season and had now settled on a 4-4-2. All the players know 4-4-2. Whilst a home game v Man City is an easy match to play on paper and affords us an opportunity to change things around, and given that we do have injuries to Alonso, Sissoko and Gonzalez, that affect us, nevertheless this was to me was Rafa tinkering just a step too far. And it nearly cost us 2 pts, or dare I say 3. I'm all for Benitez being adventurous in formations, etc, at times, and that has worked for us, no more than the CL final itself. But I think perhaps maybe that sometimes he has too much time during the week to think and tries to do things overly complex.

Carragher, Hyypia and Agger were the 3 central backs. Carra would go out wide into the full back position at times, and also allow Finnan to go forward. The same for Agger, so it was like a wing-back situation, although not the classis 5-3-2. I'm not sure what I would call this formation.

Zenden was the player deep, although at times he was in line with Carra and Hyypia and Agger. Kuyt played more wide, as did Garcia, although both got into the middle at times up front with Crouch, eg: the chance that Garcia missed from a long over the top ball from Hyypia. Gerrard played at the top of a quasi diamond, although he was back helping Zenden on plenty of occasions as well. However, Garcia and Kuyt didnt track back far.

So you could call it 5-2-3, or 3-2-1-1-2-1 ..... yeah ... that rolls off the tongue and is 100% intuitive .... not!

Whatever Bentiez was calling it, it was clear that the formation created very little. The players were not used to it and not much was coming off. Indeed, there was a lack of urgency as well wihch compounded its lack of effectivemess. Only for Man C being incompetent and the sheer brilliance of Stevie G, this could have easily been a 0-0 or worse. Man C came for the draw so barely went up-front at all. On the odd occasion they got through, one was via the exploitation of Hyppia's slowness (again) and his lack of ability to change direction quickly.

So, I'm not happy at all.

And its a case of lucky for Liverpool, as Arsenal lose again. Both clubs look as if they are going to make heavy work of getting to 3rd and 4th, which is good news for the 'also-rans', the chasing pack.

If Benitez picks another formation like this, it will be asking for trouble.

    Ffs linesman, daylight!

    Newcastle playing excellent so far.

I haven't seen the incident, but the rule isn't actually "daylight", if any part of your body that can be used to play the ball is in front of the defending player, then it's technically offside.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,563 ✭✭✭kinaldo

Sky commentators are convinced it should have stood, he looked level to me.

Newcastle are having no luck so far.

Parker injured and replaced by Butt.

Then just on the stroke of half time, Milner who was having a very good game is injured and replaced by Sibierski.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,203 ✭✭✭Attractive Nun

Well if it was level, then it obviously should have stood. Still, I'm getting sick and tired of Sky, and BBC, and to a lesser extent RTÉ, and the managers, constantly going on about referee's decisions. When everyone is complaining, it seems to me that it'll even itself out, get over it!+

Well, easier said than done to just "get over it" when there's so much at stake.

It was a lovely goal too. Martins will be gutted, he really needs one.

    Two theories.

    1) Superman Returns came out on DVD this week. Kal-el-amity James must have picked a copy up and been inspired.
    2) David Seaman phoned hJames im up and ensured him that a ridiculous haircut is the best way to cement a place as England Number 1.
