Well, after deciding to give up on smart, im getting the magnet lite ( 4M Down/ 512 K up , BB-only ) package for EUR52/month (incl. line rental )

Anyways, signed up on the 13th, received a phonecall following morning to confirm details etc, and received their service details in the post on the 15th.
got a call on the 17th saying that they had sent the order out for validation and that once that was complete then they would be able to send out the modem, after which the line would be transfered soon after.

Got a call on 23rd then saying that the account details werent verifying and that there must be an error with them or perhaps i got reconnected with eircom recently. I verified the details with the woman over the phone who obligingly kept me on the line while she put the details through there and then, after about a minute she returned saying it verified and that the order could proceed as normal again.

Got a call on the 27th saying that the order was accepted by eircom, and that they were sending out a modem, which would arrive around 5pm on the 29th so that someone would need to sign for it, or if not possible they could arrange to deliver to a work address, i said home was fine.

Woke up the morning of the 28th about 1pm, and the phone line was dead, checked the line via my spare Smart Aolynk modem check if a signal was there. there was, but obviously cant connect until the magnet modem arrives tomorrow on the 29th.

Ringing my eircom number informs 'this number is not in service' and there is no dial-tone ( all evidence of the switch to magnet, which provides voice by Voip on the broadband )

These are my line stats in my Aolynk Modem.
    Name Value
    Connected true
    Operational Mode G.Dmt.BisPlus
    State Showtime
    Tx Bit Rate 1085300
    Rx Bit Rate 14686880
    Local SNRMargin 7.0 dB
    Local Line Attn 34.5 dB
    Local Tx Power 12.3 dB
    Remote Line Attn 16.0 dB
    Remote SNRMargin 6.0 dB

Thats 14mbps download and 1mbps upload but with an SNR Margin of 7db (10db minimum recommended) either way, just goes to show the speeds that are capable of being sent to/from the magnet equipment, i wonder will the magnet modem limit the speed via software or if this will be my actual speed lol.

just an update, got the modem today ( its a 4-port Telsey Wireless Modem with WPA ).

    I repeat, a 4-port Switch and not a 4-port Router/Firewall

Anyways, i hooked up my Netgear Wireless Router WGR614v6 to it, and connected one of my computers directly to the magnet modem's lan port, and received a second IP address no problems, one digit up from the one assigned to the router.

Did a speed test, and i get and 5.5mbps download and 1.15mbps upload , stable, with a ping of 35ms to boards.ie ( due to id imagine medium interleaving ) and a traceroute which shows that the backhaul from the exchange is transmitted via the esb's fibre network.

To be honest, getting 6mbps/1.1mbps on a service which is 4mbps/512kbps is bloody great when you get that after switching from choruses crappy 1.2mbps/410kbps on a service advertised as 6mbps/512kbps

one last thing too, smtp port 25 is not blocked or restricted to their network, i can use my smtp server in the US without issue

did you keep your phone number or did your 'old' eircom number reappear and get ported or are you on a new number assigned by Magnet ????

  • Registered Users Posts: 994 ✭✭✭JNive

nope, didnt keep my previous eircom number which i was using up until the line got switched to magnet.

Was assigned a new number ( i requested not to port the number since im using VoIP with blueface anyways, and wasnt going to use the geographic number )

So ya, basically now i can keep using my phones with blueface VoIP by plugging them into my ATA which is plugged into my Netgear Modem , or else if something happened up in blueface i can hotplug my phones into the Magnet Modem Directly and use their VoIP at whatever rates they have.

Also i now have 2 wireless access points, the one on my netgear and the one on the telsey, but for workgroup purposes and configurability im using the netgear router's wireless, however again, if for any reason the netgear packed up or had issues or anything, i can just connect directly to the telsey modem directly and have a dedicated public ip assigned, seperate from that which is assigned to the router.

And if needed i can directly hook up any computer via ethernet to the telsey modem and again, get a dedicated IP assigned to it, as i said before the telsey modem from magnet is a 4-port switch, with built-in wireless access point and VoIP ATA with 2 FXS ports.

So far, its bloody excellent and the ping traces are flat, upload speed hasnt budged from 1.15mbps and download speeds from heanet are in the 400-500kb/s range ( via INEX) with speeds from my Dallas Webserver in the US ( return path through savvis and then tiscali) going at 200kb/sec and from my other server in Dallas ( return through verio-ntt and then cogent ) at 70kb/sec average - it varies from 40 to 120, and from my server in New York ( return through cogent ) comign in at between 200 and 260kb/sec.

I'm curious....you gave up on Smart ? How come ?

Since you had your old eircom number, it seems like you were a CPS/WLR customer (i.e. no BB from Smart) ? Why not just switch over ?

i applied for smart, got the modem and everything, and 2 weeks goes by, still not teransfered, so i ring up ( this was october 16th now ) and im told the exchange was full and to ring back in 2 weeks when they are due to hear back from eircom about more allocation.

Rang back 2 weeks later only to be at the end of a 10-person queue for 30 minutes and when i got there, it was an answering machine. gave it another week or so to see how things looked on the smart end of things.

got fed up of a company who are doing everything behind closed doors, and not updating customers who have ordered or who are in a queue, its like, apply now, and you'll hear back eventually whether or not you will be connected. if there is ever a problem, its always up to you to ring them, and that just delays everything.

So after it all i went with magnet, and have been amazed at the vast difference in customer service rep quality. They rang me immediately if something was up or needed clarification, they had all the details correct on their systems, and within 3 working days of them submitting my LLU order to eircom, my line was transfered. The total turnaround time was about 2 weeks from application to going live with my modem, and that was extended about 4 working days due to an initial error in the account number i provided.

If anyone is interested in particular details of the service or if certain things are restricted or unusable or anything at all, ill be more than happy to check em out and let ya know.

The biggest surprise though is the 1mbit upload i have :-)

Here are traceroutes to various destinations. Bare in mind that due to the high-speed of the line etc, there appears to be medium/high interelaving, since there is about a 28ms ping to the DSLAM. ( low interleaving = 12 and none = 3 )

I'm sick of Eircom, I had Eircom BB and I got cut off due to the Smart Telecom issue.
Now they say my number is in an unknown state and they can't put BB on it.
Despite the fact that I've had BB with them since it first came out on this very same line.

But I've spoken to Magnet and they have confirmed that the line is ok for BB.
So hopefully I should be able to get unbundled and finally get BB back in 10-15 working days.
