Good First Car?

Hey

What would be a good first car to get? I don't want to spend to much, only about 3 or 4k at most. But I'd prefer not to get just a 1L engine either or anything thats too old. (about the '00 mark)

I've had a quick look and found mostly either Citroen Saxo, Fiat Brava/Bravo or Ford Fiesta?

Any recommendations on these or would you can recommend a different make/model.....

Thats what I'm driving (first car). Also, you would be much better off with a 1 litre. Otherwise the insurance company will be charging a lot more.

I take it you are a young male without previous driving experience (ie. you dont have a no claims bonus etc) going onto your first insurance? Could be expensive.

If your not and you have some experience or are getting insurnace as a named driver then maybe something bigger than a 1 litre might be more of a possibility. Check all the insurance companies, see what they have to say before you decide.

Make sure that the Fiesta you go for is the 1.25 litre version. The 1.3 litre version is cheaper but that engine is a very old design and nowhere near as good as the 1.25 litre version.

its not true that anything over a 1L will bring on a high premium. i was quoted the same price TPFT weather i got anything from a 1L to a 1.4L and some 1.5Ls under the value of 6K. shop around and have a list of cars in your price range then get quotes for them all.

I settled on a 1.4 pug 206. and very happy with it. beats driving a 1L any day.

So would I. If the balance of your priorities goes to highest reliability / cheapest overall cost of owning one, go for the Micra. If the balance goes to driveability / handling / fun, then get a Fiesta

Correct. This is a recent development (last few years). A 1.4 might not cost a cent more to insure compared to a 1.0 depending on make / model / person to be insured, etc. Best ring insurance companies to get quotes for any cars you're interested in
