Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

ok this may sound a little bit complicated

ive got a laptop, which doesnt have an optical drive. i have a hard disk freshly formatted outside.

    i can boot into usb.

    is it possible to either:

    1. find a way to install windows (2000 probably) on that hard disk (using a usb 2.0 cable to ide for the hdd) from another laptop so i can use the laptop without the optical disk

    or

    2. boot into the laptop without optical drive with usb, then installing windows onto the hard disk thats in it using a 3.5" external hdd using usb?

let me know if im not clear.

    is that possible?

    thanks for helping!

You would need the contents of windows 2000 cd on the usb pen
run setup from usb and hope it detects the usb 3.5 external hdd
I tried this with xp and it see the drive as a local disk which is connect to
    USB 2.0 IDE HDD

ok. what i did was: copied win xp cd to the hdd on the laptop without optical disk (takin the hdd out and connecting a usb ide to it).

put it back into the laptop. and booted with a floppy.

then went into c:\i386 and ran winnt.exe.

ive been trying that for some time and it would always hang at some point for no reason.

what i did extra: i had 2x128mb ram on it, so i took one out.

while it was loading (when it asks whether to install 3rd party things press f6),

i pressed f7. usually it used to hang there, but for some reason, after i took out the ram and pressed f7, it worked flawlessly.

oh btw, i also upgraded the bios just before and disabled IRda, Serial and Parallel ports.

dont know which factor helped, but now that laptop is purring away with xp. :)

    good luck y'all!
