depends on how filthy they are... you've got to avoid using harmful chemicals to clean the vinyl when it gets dusty. no isopropyl, no detergent and water in the sink, and no record cleaning spray (the record cleaning industry is a scam). the best method i have found is to use a sheet of 80 grit sandpaper on it. put the record on a firm surface, and buff the dusty spots with the sandpaper. the abrasive action also enhances the grooves, giving a warmer, more analog sound.

yes, i am joking! for the love of god don't take that seriously!

i use lukewarm water mixed with lighter fluid and an antistatic cloth, but my records are all in perfect nick and i store them upright out of direct sunlight and away from the central heating... here's some useful threads from another board i post on, hope this helps! a friend of mine does them in the kitchen sink with tepid water and a tiny bit of washing up liquid - it takes care of grease surface marks etc...

I would use a small amount of washing up liquid in lukewarm water as stated above. If I get a second hand vinyl that's really grimy I use metholated spirit on a clean cloth or cotten wool.

I use a smidgeon of record cleaning solution on a carbon cloth for heavy dirt and before I play any record I always use a record cleaning brush like this:

to remove the bits of dust that invariably accumulate from normal use. This stops them ever getting to the heavy dirt stage.

I do exactly the same with my collection, it's the best way to look after vinyl.
