ok so i was home at lunchtime. turned on my laptop and popped into the bathroom. i emerged to find my laptop downloading windows updates. also a popup on the toolbar said "wireless network found".
Now I don't have an internet connection but I opened the tab marked "wireless connections (or something to that effect)" and under available connections it listed an eircom wireless connection. I opened firefox, but couldn't connect to the internet.
Whats going on? I live in Dublin city centre. could it be that there is a hot spot nearby and my computer connected to it? though i thought codes and a card was needed for that sort of carry on?

Maybe one of your neighbours has a wireless router which is not password protected. If your downloading update then you should be able to access the internet through firefox. Try a direct connection in connection settings in firefox.

Just because a wireless network was found, doesn't mean you're actually connected to it. It just means that Windows knows its there and lets you the option of connecting if you wish. Of course, if it is an Eircom hotspot that means buying one of their code cards.

Well the fact that the OP's PC was in the process of downloading Windows updates suggests that it was.

Many people set up home routers without specifying a password for the in-built encryption (WEP).

You can also let Windows XP connect to the nearest available unencrypted wireless network.
