Went on Sunday to see The Departed. It's not bad at all. It's upstairs, and it looks like there will be new "retail units" opening downstairs from the cinema.

Has anyone utilised the VIP section (or whatever it's called) and if so, any opinions? Mrs Wishbone Ash is insisting that she does not sit with the masses :D (Joke!).

Is the entrance via the shopping centre?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,451 ✭✭✭blastman

Yep, come in at the end of the centre where Superquinn it, go upstairs and it's there.

On a side note is the new Penny's connected to the shopping center,I could not find it the last time I was there. You surly don't have to walk back out to the main street to gain access.

I've heard that popcorn and wine are included but I can't confirm that. (and better seating).

It's not connected at the moment but I believe it will be soon.

I went to the cinema there a week or so ago - very confusing (teething problems only, no doubt). You can buy tickets at the sweet counter, everyone was queuing at the entrance just to be told to buy them at the counter. The standard of english isn't great with some of the staff, so it causes some frustration and when we were going into the cinema itself, there were two guys - one checking tickets and one talking on his mobile phone. The working guy took my ticket and as I was walking through, the other guy (who by now had finished his conversation) grabbed my arm really roughly and said "where are you going?" The other guy told him he had taken my ticket, and the grabby guy just let my arm go - I'm not a violent person, but he was close to a smack in the nose. Lots of people seemed to be slightly annoyed by the staff, but they've probably worked it out by now. The screens are nice, sound system is good and seats are comfy - I'll be going back.

edit: just remembered, a girl behind the counter asking a guy if he wanted "chickets?"

    her: "Chickets?"
    him: wha?
    Chickets??
    WHA?
CHICKETS? YOU WANT CHICKETS FOR THE SHOW?

myself and my g/f just have to say chickets to crack each other up now.

yeah its 19 blips for movie, large popcorn and drink ( they havnt sorted the alcoholo license yet ) and leather recliner seating

its decent enough, seen a few films there now, i go for the convenience

and yes to access penny's you must leave the pavillions and walk back around towards main street swords, and turn towards the police station and its there beside the station.

Went last week to see Casino Royale. Checked the times online, there was a show at 8 and again at 8.40, thought we'd get a little shopping in before teh 8.40 show.

Got there at 7.50 to get tickets for 8.40, girl on the ticket desk said that th 8.40 show was VIP only!!!. Gave out that there was no indication of this on the web site, and how were we to know. Asked what was included : Nicer recliner seats, popcorn (not large, asked about that) and a glass of wine. 19 euro a head.

So we forsook the shopping and got 2 tickets for 8.00 instead, 9.50 a head. Not a huge saving, but I refuse to pay 38 euro to go to the cinema.

Seats were comfortable. They don't have a folding up part, so no fear od losing your jacket down teh back when you stand up.

There was a noticible terracing in the auditorium, so no problems with big headed people sitting in front of you.

Sound was fantastic, and the screen was a good size.

Overall, staff were friendly, cinema was clean (well it's new) and well laid out, and apart from the unadvertised VIP only showing it was a good experience.

I ended up in this cinema a few nights back (paying normal fee not the €19 entry). Its ok, has a lounge area for before the movie. The cinema is small enough in size (would seat around 60). But I did not see any leather on the reclining seats as stated by the poster.

The seating is roomy, seats wider, more leg room, recline did not impress me personally.

Not worth the lids! In case your wondering I got in by arguing the fact the failed to display the prices on the website and also in the premises. Took ten minutes and some "ah com’on this is a rip off for my first time..." speak.

one thing to point out is the kids club (for those with kids) is only 2.50 for both adults and kids, so for 5 nicker you can take your little gem to see a movie.

I took the young lad to see some animated movie which I cant exactly recall the name of (Farm Yard?) and we were the only ones there. Private screening just for us. It was great fun. Nice comfortable seats, great screen and sound, and all for a sky-diver.

What day/time is the kids club on...?

Barnyard was the movie. A real tear-jerker :)

The Movies @ Swords Cinema is really good. It's clean and they've got 11 screens.

Once you get used to buying your ticket at one of the concession stands, it's grand.

Although the VIP stuff is a rip-off. Not only here but in all cinemas that are introducing it. UCI have these 'preferential' seats now that you can pay an extra couple of quid for, and you get to sit in exactly the same spot that you would have three months ago.

The web site leaves a bit to be desired.

    http://www.movies-at.ie/

I know where the Pavillion is but for those that don't - no directions or address.

Now Showing only lists Dundrum. The Reel Parents section is out of date and Coming soon lists movies which are now showing.

Wouldn't pay the VIP but I can see job social clubs going for it.

Have been to swords cinema in pavillions a few times. I thought it was excellent. Great service and nice auditoriums. Also, if you go to a screening before 1pm tickets are only 5euro. I went to see Rocky Balboa on Sunday at 1130am and the place was empty. Great parking right outside the cinema level, and there was only 30 people in the screening. Pretty much half price cinema, plus gets you out of bed on a sunday. highly recommend the pre-1pm show some weekend if you have nothing on.
Been a couple of times on saturday nights too. Was impressed with the security policy. No gangs hanging around and no horse antics in the auditorium. A security guy came in a couple of times as the trailers played to keep an eye on proceedings and make sure everyone was 'settled'. nice to know if you pay 20euro on a Saturday you will get to watch the movie without distraction.
Anyway, I think its a savage addition to the pavillions. I hav ebeen to dundrum a couple of times too. The VIP screening in dundrum costs 15.00 euro and you get small coke and small popcorn. This is actually cheaper than paying the normal 9.75euro and buying small popcorn and small coke. The only thing is that they sell out online days before the screening so the only way to get VIP on saturday is to book on tuesday or wednesday online. the recliner seats aren;t great, but the space is nice. also you are so far back to the back wall yo ucan hear the clicking of the movie reel as it spins around. you only notice it on quiet scenes though. all in all, I'd be just as happy in normal seating. the swords VIP exprience for 19.00 is crazy... I dunno how anyone could pay 38.00 for a couple to see a flick. not if there was a bottle of wine included. let alone a small glass.

I dont why movies @swords is so expensive at 9:30 an adult each this is an expensive night out. plus you have parking on top of it after. Considering the cost of dvd rental I think this is a real rip off!

€9.30 seems to be the average price now days, correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, the parking would usually only cost €1 as the first 2 hours are free in the Pavillions - unless you're seeing all the LOTR movies together, most movies don't go over 2.5 hours.

I've seen about 5 films at Movies @ Swords and parked everytime but never had to pay for parking.I stayed longer than 2 hours on two occasions,I dont think you have to pay after 6pm.At first I thought the ticket prices were a bit high compared to the cinema in Santry but its a much nicer cinema and you can pick your own seat. Now I just book a student ticket online as they never look for student cards.
