    The reason I ask is..

My corp leader and friends went out to get some salvage. They were averaging at 5% chance of getting components.

I on the other hand am averaging around 80% chance of finding loot. No idea why.

It's great :) Making about 10+ million per level 2 mission in components.

Basically your chance to salvage on rats it related to their bounty, easy stuff that you would kill in level 1 and 2 are easy to salvage, where as 0.0 rat BS are really hard.

Heres what we got on our forums about it :D
Hi Xelas. Just a quick note on what I've learned about the Salvaging skill today.

I have the salvage skill at Level 1. I bought the basic 'Salvager I' module. It's under 'Electronics and Sensor Upgrades' -> Scanners -> 'Data and Composition Scanners'. I couldn't find the 'Salvage Tackle' module for sale in Fountain.

Anyway, the Salvager goes in the high slot. It's requirements are low, so you can probably put it on even a frigate. You fly up to a wreck and you have to empty the loot out of it first. The Salvager has a 5K range, so once you get the loot out you don't have to be so close. (I was tractor beaming and salvaging one wreck while flying to another.) The Salvager has a 10 second timer. It just keeps cycling, telling you that you failed to salvage anything until it finally succeeds. When it does, it will put whatever you salvaged in your cargo hold. It can also tell you that there's nothing to salvage. In both those cases, the wreck is destroyed, like emptying a loot can.

Looks like each level of the Salvaging skill increases your chances of finding something on each cycle of the Salvager module. But since you can just keep it going, not sure if it's worth getting the skill very high. Unless it increases the chance of getting good loot. But it doesn't say that.

You can evidently salvage other people's wrecks without drawing aggro, but since you have to empty the loot out, unless they did that for you...

Anyway, something new to play with. Makes ratting a little different.

    Exequror
    3 cargo expanders
    3 salvager's
    1 tractor
    1 mwd
3 sensor jammers (multi-spec unless you know their sensor type then specialise)

then drones to suit your taste.

    the perfect cheap salvager.

for a more expensive one replace the execquror with an ishtar.

I've given salvaging a quick go alright looting wrecks and then salvaging using the following:

    Badger II
    1 Tractor
    1 Salvager
    1 Afterburner
    3 Cargo expanders

and made about 1.5 mil in around 10 minutes, my savlaving skill is only level 1 for the moment and I'm quite sure a Ferox with some Cargo expanders, a MWD and 3 or 4 salvagers would do quite nicely too and make for a more optimal setup.

I starting to question the merits of mission running for LP and making ISK as a wise career move! :D Salvaging and some PvP as a result of can robbing is starting to have some appeal. It will be interesting to see how evething pans out and what CCP does next.

Ok for a salvager I have..

    caracel.
2 heavy missile racks. (this is just to nuke possible rats incoming)
    2 salvagers.
    1 tractor beam.
    10mn MWD + AB.
kitted for shields (although after this everything is optional).

Unless your going for a long haul you don't need cargo expanders as componets are tiny. speed is really what you need.

Also from various salvaging it appears certain groups give different amount of drops.

pithi = 8 out of 10 wreaks gave a comp.
mercs = 0 out of 15 wreaks gave a comp. (may be skill related)

Also the level of salvaging and its sub skills determine how easy it is to salvage something from a ship. Everytime you fail you have lost a chance of getting a good comp.

high level ships also require very high level skills from what I can see.

That said if you do get comps at the moment its like printing money for me :) 20 million so far from two level 2 missions and I still have about 4 millions worth of stuff to sell.

the problem with a small cargo hold is twofold

    1. you cant take any possible loot, drones are excellent killers a single light scout tech 2 can kill npc frigates quickly.

    2. scrap metal takes up a lot of space when salvaging.

i made about 15 million from salvaged parts alone last night and another 12 million in sold modules, i managed to loot a few player wrecks.

Ive purchased myself a myrmidon to do my salvaging, now i just have to kit it out.

Ahh but your ratting are you? What I am doing is ..

    1. Run mission. Ignore loot + salvage.

    2. bookmark.

    3. Return and mission complete. Change to salvager ship.

    4. head back to mission to loot.

So far had no looting problems at all. As it stands at the moment components are worth a heck of a lot more then normal loot drops. So if it is for example scrap metal I leave it behind because its worth feck all.

I'm using my Typhoon to rat in 0.0 for the last few days. My skills for the phoon are quite poor but improving and I can manage the 2 800k + 1/2 cruiser/frig spawns I'm finding with a little patience.

I'm using 4 malkuth cruise, 1 prototype NosL, 1 tractor and 2 salvage. I'm keeping everything I collect in the hope a corpmate will be able to put them all togehter for the corp's new carrier. That'll no doubt take a while, though considering the rarity of some components.
Salvaging doesn't take too much of my time seeing as my dps is quite low and I can fight and salvage similtaneously. As my heavy drone and missile skills improve that may change though and improving my salvaging skill my be usefull. The nos shouldn't be be too necessary then either so an extra salvager will help.

At the moment my biggest problem is handling out all the loot. My cargo hold fills up very quickly (too many cap charges for a start) and having to empty every wreck means jettesioning the crap again which is irritating when trying to squeeze the good loot.

The myrmidon is a fantastic mission runner, im running with 5 200mm rails and a salvager, tech 2 drones, 2 mag stabs and 2 targeting comps. rails hitting at 70k and the drones ripping anything closer apart. i managed to kill 2 battleships in a level 2 human cattle mission :D

salvage as you fight. if what you are fighting dies to quickly go for bigger targets. if im running missions with someone else ill do a salvage only ship.

Hence the reason I have a different loadout for loot after missions. Also once you complete the mission it becomes normal space so you can speed loot much faster.

scrap metal when reprocessed can be worth a few quid.... or even if your into building ships the reprocessed minerals will help get u that ship quicker
