Well myself and a work mate travelled from Limerick upto
Midlands Rifle Club last week to visit.
He had his .22LR with him but we could not shoot as the wind was so bad.
We rang ahead and We knew the wind was bad but we thought
it may die off enough once we got there.

Met some of the members who were friendly and spend about 2hrs talking
they said they would send us out membership forms but we have not got anything
in the post yet. (is that a bad sign I wonder or did they just loose our details)
Planning weather permitting to try visit their again maybe next Sunday.
(Plus I dont have a car so depending on the work mate for a lift)

Anyway If I was to (be accepted and) become a member of this club I would want
to purchase my own rifle for the very first time. Not straight away
    but in a few months.

From doing a sniff about it seems the CZ 452 is a popular rifle for .22
dunno how much Irish prices are though. If I was to buy a scope I would
ideally like something that I could use on another rifle If I was to upgrade
    in the future.

    Long term.....
I know that I would not be satisfied with a .22LR as ideally I would love to be able
to buy a rifle and select a calibre that would let me use the 300-400m range.

Wondering if I would be wasting my time trying to apply for a larger calibre
for the very first time or if i would be better off sticking to a .22 and later
saving for something else. I am familiar with .223 but from lurking
6.5 mm appears popular. suggestions would be welcome.

I went into my local gunshop this weekend who simply said they could
order whatever I wanted but could not give me prices or a catalog. :-(
    for information purposes.

The Local co-op now sells gun cabinets so I must check them out.
One thing I was not clear about was if you are a rifle owner.
Do you need an Alarm in your House ?
I hear you dont for a .22LR but for larger calibre stuff you do ?

The only requirements for a .22lr is somewhere to shoot it you dont need a safe but obviously its a good thing to have and you'll end up getting it later on anyway.

A 17hmr might be an option its still a rimfire round but packs alot more punch than a 22lr you can shoot comfortably out to about 200yards with it.

For a CZ 452 the prices are round and about 400-450 new i think

Cheers for the info. The .17HMR may be a happy in-between
Dunno how the Local Garda station would feel if I was to apply for
a rifle that was chambered for something with the work "Magnum" in the
description though. I hear they dont like words like that or anything at all
that sounds like it came from a film or a military/police buzz word.

Forgot to mention I am only interested in Target Shooting but I have no
interest in getting anything for Hunting.

    Bullets,
free piece of advice.I see you are in Limerick like meself. If your local "gun dealer",is a certain fellow up near the market....Run away very quickly!!!!
That nonsense that he can order anything, not give you a price for it or order it from a catoluge is for wont of a better word a scam!! Would you buy a car from a brochure, with the dealer not being able to give you price or specs???Same with a gun. What happens if you order it,and dont like the fit or features? You are stuck with it.He wont take trade backs or has the facilities to store firearms. You need to go to a dealer that has a few guns in stock.
I know that this is tricky in your situation, being transportless but if you can get to Nenagh,Knocklong,Castleisland,Tralee,Newmarket on Fergus,Rathkeale[?]or Galway. There are some decent Gun dealers there who have a good supply of guns on hand.
That fellow is fine for ammo, somtimes,[he couldnt get me any 9mm.So much for his claim to get anything] and fishing tackle.
Just my hard experiance ,so Cevat Emptor.

Yeah would like to be able to examine a rifle before I would buy it,
Would not like the idea of just ordering something by looking at a spec/pic
I would compare that to like shopping in Argos.

At the moment I am just information gathering.
I had planned on probably contacting the Tackle Shop in Tullamore when
the time came to me actually getting my own gear. Mainly cos
the club I am interested in is Midlands and the guy that will regularly
give me a lift there should be able to swing by the tackle shop if needed.
I did hear this morning that the Place in Rathkeale was supposed
to be good but I had not heard of it until now. Also Landers I hear
    is good but expensive.

Main thing for me now is to be become a member of a club and Learn more
about the sport before I start buying stuff. Any Previous experiance with
shooting was all with the FCA with Iron Sites and once or twice with family
who did Clay shoots so I dont actually know that much about the sport. I am
looking forward to shooting with optical sites though.
